A Harrisburg neighborhood group is sponsoring the inaugural Harrisburg Curb Appeal Improvement Contest to get residents involved in spring cleaning.
"The idea for the contest came out of a general discussion at a homeowners meeting," said Phillip Williams, chairman of the contest. "The whole object of the contest is to get people to spend time and effort to improve the curb appeal of their home."
The contest began Tuesday and runs through May 26. Harrisburg residents are asked to take photos of their home as it is before improvements and to take another once the improvements are complete. Five winners will be chosen at the end of May.
"We're not asking that residents spend a lot of money on the improvements because we believe you can get some dramatic results by putting in some elbow grease," he said.
Examples of improvements include cutting hedges, planting flowers, painting porches, picking up trash and removing "unsightly" items from front yards, Mr. Williams said.
"It's not the size of the project, but what you chose to do to improve your curb appeal that really counts," he said.
Mr. Williams hopes the contest will also lead to a greater sense of pride in the neighborhood.
"People want to take pride of where they live, and when you improve a home's curb appeal it starts a domino effect," he said. "An overall improvement reflects positively on everyone in the neighborhood and thus everyone will be proud of where they live."
