One dead in downtown Augusta wreck

  • Follow Metro

A Martinez man was killed late Wednesday in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred in downtown Augusta and involved an off-duty Aiken County sheriff's officer.

Samuel Jason Dickerson, 32, of the 3300 block of Quaker Springs Road in Martinez, has been identified as the lone fatality in the wreck, said Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald.

The wreck occurred about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Broad and Eve streets. Richmond County sheriff's Deputy Robert Bryant said the wreck occurred as an open top 1976 model Jeep driven by the deceased attempted to turn left from Broad onto Eve Street. At that point, Deputy Bryant said, the Jeep was struck by a 2004 GMC 1500 pickup, driven by an off-duty Aiken County sheriff's officer. Deputy Bryant said the deceased was ejected from his vehicle.

Deputy Bryant said he couldn't release any names, but said the officer had a broken arm from the wreck and was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital. The deputy said a woman also was in the Jeep at the time and was unresponsive and taken to MCG.

Deputy Bryant said two other people were in the off-duty officer's vehicle and were also being treated at MCG. Deputy Bryant said the deceased was ruled at fault in the wreck and alcohol is not considered a factor.

Witnesses at the scene who didn't want their name used said they found Mr. Dickerson lying on a front porch severely bleeding and attempted to assist him. A witness at the scene also wanting to remain unnamed said he saw an officer pouring out two bottles taken from the GMC's back seat. Blood was visible on the porch and a hazmat team was on site as late as 1 a.m. cleaning the area.

I really don't want to see the off duty officer as being at fault in any way, but when the RCSO refuses to release his name, which is public information that is a misdemeanor to withhold, it really causes me to think they are covering up some wrong doing. Further more it doesn't help that a witness saw the off duty cop emptying bottles. Legal BAC's for both drivers is standard procedure in all fatal accidents, and the results are also public information, exact results, not pass/fail results. Something aint right with this one. I know the guy that died is at fault in the accident since he was turning left, but if alcohol was a contributing factor that shouldn't be covered up. If the guy driving the other vehicle were just some Joe Shmoe, he would have a legal BAC taken weather he was emptying bottles or not, just as standard procedure.

Go to Broad Street and Eve Street and look who is standing around and tell me if they are a good witness.

It also says that "an officer" not the off duty officer was pouring bottles out. Everyone automatically jumps to conclusions. The passengers may have been drinking but that does not mean the off duty deputy was. Also the deputy handling the accident does not have to give the names involved. They are in the report and that is accesible to the public. So yall can keep watching if you want but I suggest you read the article again and watch what you read.

Another tragedy....

Turn left in front of oncoming traffic in an open top jeep? There's not much protection with one of those. 35mph is slow enough to react when you drive defensively, but deputies have a habit of ignoring speed limits. (who's going to stop or charge them?) No mention of seat belts usually means the ejected driver was wearing one. Justus4 has it right, poor driving skills. Both drivers were old enough to act better. This reminds me of a very famous quote of the '90s, "Hey, everyone does it".

I see a lot of assumptions from a lot of perfect people this morning!

WHATDIDIDO

That is not public information, at least until a report is filed. Also the next of kin of the deputy may just want to find out from the police rather than the newspaper.

WHATDIDIDO

Fallendown, on this one I am in agreement with you. There is no way in hell that the Deputy would risk his job and pour out alcohol in front of witnesses. If they wanted to cover it up, all they had to do was wait until the vehicle was towed from the scene.

SHELBY69

Actually, the deputy will probably have a bac drawn while at the hospital. They are the ones who would do this test.

Why are some people missing the most important thing? A person lost his life! My heart goes out to his family at thier time of bereavement. As for Fallendown, what if this were one of your family members, would you feel the same way about the witnesses? To the deputy, and everyone involved in this accident, may God bless and keep you.

I say we shoot first and ask questions later. Lets go string up this Deputy!

If you saw "somthing being poured of two bottles" then stand up give your name and tesitfy otherwise shut the hell up and quit telling lies.

FallingLeaves

Please wear your seatbelts. That is the only certain thing I could draw from this article.

Guess Saint Patricia is a wee bit judgemental. My heart goes out to the families for their loss. Tragic accident. Accident being the operative word.

HippieChick

The accident sounds rather sever considering that the speed limit in the down town area.

People try read too many details between the lines but isn't that what the paper wants, to stir controversy. Could be the witness was lying just to cause trouble (why not give your name?) or been mistaken on what he saw. The article said AN OFFICER was seen pouring something out of two bottles (the witness didn't say beer). Could have been a spilt soda, water, fruit drink, or it very well could have been beer but we always assume the worse. Controversy makes the article more interesting.

There most likely would not have been a fatality had the deceased been wearing his seatbelt. You stand a much better chance staying with your vehicle in a collision.

Wear your seatbelts, it may save your life.

BRANDY1982

okay fallen down..who are you to pass judgement on all that live in that area. not all of them are crack heads. it could have been a reliable witness. you certainly don't know. what we do know is that look at the trouble they have had with the aiken county deputies lately huh? i'm sure they didn't make it up that they were pouring bottles out.speed had to be a factor in such a severe accident. the speed limit in that area is not 55.

jack

Something smells here. The off duty officer was seen emptying bottles after the wreck. Time for S Hudson, WGAC to start snooping.

ColdBeerBoiledPeanuts

Is that a fact, jack? I think you have your facts a bit skewed!

Since when did Broad and Eve St become downtown?? For the people at The Chronicle who don't know their Augusta geography, that's Harrisburg!

i grew up with lil'd...great person and great personality. i agree, the point is a very young life is gone and will be greatly missed. however, the cause does need to be investigated. just from what i read, my opinion is that there seems to be a definate speed factor. if the speed limit is 35, how fast was the truck driving to knock someone out of any vehicle to have them anywhre near a porch. the minimum frontage of a home to any highway is 20 feet. since his injuries were fatal, i don't see how he could have moved himself to a porch. just my opinion, but if it were my child, i would ask these questions...when i was able to think again. all my prayers and sympathy to the family.

christian134

Hillguy I wondered about that myself this morning....This has to have been Walton and Eve St.....

sueboo418

If you drive on Broad Street at Eve, those aparments are only a few feet off of the road. check it out.
