House postpones bill on school choices
COLUMBIA --- A bill requiring school districts to give their pupils more educational options appears dead for the year.
A House panel voted 4-1 Tuesday to postpone further debate on a bill that made districts offer choices within their schools but made cross-district transfers voluntary.
The measure is similar to a bill that passed the Legislature last year but was vetoed by the governor. The House did not have enough votes to override the veto.
Subcommittee Chairman Bill Whitmire criticized this year's version saying it doesn't require school boards to allow transfers to and from other districts.
Lawmakers delay vote on school lunch bill
COLUMBIA --- South Carolina lawmakers just couldn't swallow the idea of requiring healthful food in schools.
A legislative proposal to ban pepperoni pizza from school lunch lines and Moon Pies from vending machines appears dead for the year.
A House panel voted Tuesday to postpone further debate on the measure, saying local school boards should decide what pupils can buy.
The legislation would have banned high-fat foods from school lunch programs and remove calorie-loaded snacks and soft drinks from school vending machines.
