Congrats! We don't see too much "good" news anymore. It is refreshing to read about this young man and his dreams.
A Martinez man who is headed to the U.S. Naval Academy recently received appointments to three military academies.
Paul Maile, 19, also was recommended for appointments to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Air Force Academy by U.S. Rep. Paul Broun.
"Typically, it's not unusual for someone to get two appointments. Three appointments is a bigger deal, but it does happen," said Reagan Williams, a field representative for Dr. Broun and the academy director for the 10th District.
Mr. Maile, a 2007 Lakeside High School graduate who is attending Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., said his career aspirations determined his decision to attend the Naval Academy.
"I want to be an astrophysical engineer, and they have the best space program," he said.
He also is bucking family tradition by selecting Annapolis, Md.
"I will be the first person in my family not to be a part of the Army," Mr. Maile said.
His father said a family member has served in the military since the French and Indian War.
Mr. Maile decided to carry on his family's military tradition when he was in elementary school.
"I had done many reports on many leaders. They had gone to West Point and were all military leaders," he said.
Dr. Broun recognized the same trait in Mr. Maile.
"Maile is an outstanding leader and excellent student," the congressman said in a statement. "It is an honor to receive one military appointment, but to receive three appointments is exceptional. I believe Maile's dedication to his school, community and country will lay the groundwork for a brilliant career."
Mr. Maile's extracurricular activities at Lakeside included Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, track and field and cross country. He received academic awards and attended the Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky., one summer.

Way to go Paul...Congratulations to you for your acheivements....God bless you and keep you under His care...
Well done Paul Maile, your efforts are noteworthy. Someone did a fine job of setting you on the path of achievement.
Congrats! Keep your eye on your goals and continue to be a good role model with your efforts.
Get ready for the beat down! Why the time at the prep school? That doesn't bode well for the rigors of an Academy education.
You go young man! Indeed a patriot.
I'll hold my breath till the kid actually graduates....
