Teamwork helps build a better city

Have you have noticed some recent improvements that have helped our west Augusta gateway?

Both sides of Washington Road have been edged and the street swept from the Broad Street exit to Pleasant Home Road. River Watch Parkway from Pleasant Home Road to Martin Marietta railroad tracks, has had the street swept along the median curbs.

Martin Marietta has always had beautifully landscaped entrances. The River Watch Center temporary wooden sign has been removed, and flowers were planted around the attractive permanent River Watch Center sign. The Masters Industrial Park trucking company, which backs up to the West Hills neighborhood, put up a privacy fence and added gravel to the parking area. Many years ago, the Augusta Ready Mix owner built a wall and planted trees, which have created a beautiful entrance into their business off River Watch Parkway.

Let's make 2008 the year to stop littering our roadways; keep our curbs or ditches cleared; keep storm drains clear; straighten leaning signs; and trim any limbs hanging over the sidewalk or curbs to less than 8 feet, to help walkers or postmen. If you see "work from home" litter signs on the rights-of-way or light poles, remove them.

Do you have a 3-inch number on your home or mailbox, or a 4-inch number on your business to help emergency workers or meter readers? This ordinance is the same for Richmond and Columbia counties.

Please show you care about your community, and help those who serve Augusta each day.

These same people that contribute to the litter problem will not cease until maybe camera's catch them in the act....But that is neither here nor there, if they do it once or twice that pretty much sets the tone right off the bat...you say for what...they don't care about their surroundings and don't really care what you are I or anyone else thinks for that matter....Most times these people are just downright lazy......

A little active litter enforcement from unmarked cars and having to clean 10 miles of littered highway as a penalty would stop a lot of this. I'm proud of the people who work to make a difference.

i have always wanted to pull signs off of telephone poles or signs in the rightof way. if placement is against the law i will start. is it against the law?

Good question, Denali. Those signs look like crap. Good letter, Fran. I hope the improvements aren't "Just for Masters". I have found that if you move into a neighborhood that could use some work, and you improve your property, some of your neighbors will follow suit. Most businesses will do the same, especially if folks stop by and apply a bit of consumer influence. There will be some that won't, but maybe they'll move...

Fran, this is the perfect time of year for this message. Augusta couldn't be prettier than it was last week and this. So many little things could be addressed by the citizens in front of their own homes and businesses. I do. And I am glad you keep reminding the neighbors that this is a community and we need to SHOW pride by acting instead of just expecting somebody else to do it. AIN'T MY JOB doesn't cut it. Thank you for what you do.

The mailman is still dumping his cigarettes in front of my mailbox. I'm going to put a little waste basket under it pretty soon if this keeps up. I wonder how long it will take for his mail load to catch on fire?

Oh and I do have my three inch REFLECTIVE numbers on my mailbox. The first set I got wasn't reflective at all at night, that was a waste of money.
