Assistant prosecutor charged with betting

CHARLESTON --- An assistant prosecutor for Calhoun, Dorchester and Orangeburg counties was among 27 people arrested in a raid on a Hanahan house where people were playing poker, police say.

Don Sorenson was charged with unlawful games and betting. He submitted his resignation to chief prosecutor David Pascoe.

But Mr. Pascoe told The (Charleston) Post and Courier that he is suspending Mr. Sorenson without pay until he decides what the 13-year veteran's future will be with the office.

The arrests Friday night were the result of a 10-month investigation. Officers executed a search warrant and seized more than $40,000, Charleston County sheriff's Maj. John Clark said.

Investigators said the Hanahan house was hosting a well-organized poker and gambling operation with paid pit bosses and dealers. Poker is illegal under a 200-year-old state law that prohibits dice and card games.

Man charged in death of teen at nightclub

HOLLYWOOD --- Charleston County deputies say a 25-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of an 18-year-old outside a nightclub.

Deputies say Robert Heyward was injured in the shooting that killed Edward Forrest III of Johns Island. Mr. Heyward was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment before being charged in Mr. Forrest's death.

According to an automated phone system at the jail, Mr. Heyward was in custody Sunday, but there was no answer at the number for the jail's duty officer.

Sheriff's Maj. John Clark told The (Charleston) Post and Courier that the fight started inside the club, then spilled out into the parking lot.

So dice and card games are illegal in SC? I grew up in SC and remember my dad studying card tricks. So we broke the law.I have also played Rummy in SC with cards. We would always have a set of cards. No money was involved, but the story here says there is a 200-year-old state law that prohibits dice and card games.Does that include monopoly? I remember playing monopoly in SC.

Oops! Guess I'm equally guilty Rose. I can't count the number of all night card games hosted by family and friends. We would always take our bucket of nickels and pennies so we could bet too! I actually have several regulation poker decks of souvenir cards with South Carolina written on the backs with scenes from around the state. Where should I turn the cards, and myself, in?
