SAKHIR, Bahrain --- Lewis Hamilton crashed his McLaren car while Ferrari dominated the practice session Friday for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Hamilton withdrew from the afternoon practice session after losing control while coming around the sixth corner, veering off the track and sliding sideways into the protective tires. Hamilton's front wheel was snapped, while pieces of his car lay strewn in the sand.

He emerged unhurt.

Ferrari established itself as the team to beat, as Felipe Massa outpaced teammate Kimi Raikkonen to take both practice sessions.

KANAAN PENALIZED: Tony Kanaan chose to ignore a black flag in the IRL IndyCar Series opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway last Saturday, and officials made him pay for it Friday.

The Brazilian was docked 30 minutes of practice time on the opening day of on-track activity for Sunday's Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Fla.

The penalty didn't slow the former IRL champion much. He was third fastest in the opening practice. By the end of the day, he was second only to Helio Castroneves.

IRL ALTERS QUALIFYING: The IRL has changed its qualifying procedure on street and road courses.

Like Formula One, the new procedure will include multiple sessions, with the slowest drivers eliminated in the first two.

The new system will go into effect in today's qualifying on a street circuit in St. Petersburg, Fla.
