Severe storms strike; more possible today

COLUMBIA --- Severe storms brought hail to several counties in South Carolina on Friday, but no major damage was reported. A tornado watch was issued Friday night for all of the state west of Interstate 95.

Severe thunderstorms began developing after 6 p.m. Hail was reported in Oconee, McCormick, Newberry Fairfield and York counties.

The National Weather Service issued several tornado warnings, but no twisters were reported Friday night. About 1,300 people were without power, mostly in the Upstate.

The weather service says more severe thunderstorms are possible today.

Man gets 50 years for stabbing his mother

COLUMBIA --- A man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his mother by stabbing her more than 80 times, then hitting her in the neck with an ax.

Authorities say Donna Phillips was found dead in the Pontiac home she shared with her then 19-year-old son, Christopher Caldwell, in April 2006.
