A 58-year-old Trenton, S.C., man was killed Monday night in a traffic accident in Edgefield County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The highway patrol is investigating.

Gravel truck hits police car, kills inmate

A Richmond County inmate was killed Tuesday after the police cruiser in which he was riding was struck by a gravel truck in Burke County.

Landrell Kyler, 21, was taken to Burke County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Mr. Kyler, who had been sentenced for a probation violation and charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, was being taken to Treutlen County Probation Detention Center in Soperton, Ga. Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said the truck is believed to have run a stop sign and slammed into the cruiser on Georgia Highway 56 South at Byne-Sunshine Road near Waynesboro. The truck driver's name wasn't available Tuesday.

"We move inmates hundreds of thousands of miles in the course of a year," Sheriff Strength said. "This is a first."

Deputy Danny Key and a second inmate, Justyn Creque, 19, were injured and taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Mr. Creque and Deputy Key have since been released, a hospital spokeswoman said. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Man dies hours after one-vehicle wreck

A Wagener man died Tuesday at Medical College of Georgia Hospital hours after being involved in a car wreck on South Carolina Highway 389.

John Michael Doolittle, 18, was the lone occupant of the vehicle, a 1992 Honda Civic, and was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m., according to an e-mailed news release from Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. Mr. Doolittle was reportedly traveling southbound near Walter Poole Road late Monday when his vehicle crossed the northbound lane and left the roadway.

Mr. Carlton said that Mr. Doolittle overcorrected the vehicle, causing it to overturn several times. Mr. Doolittle was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, according to the release. Preliminary toxicology results showed Mr. Doolittle was not impaired, but speed was considered a factor. The crash marks the ninth fatal wreck in Aiken County this year.

Commission OKs pet ID tags at first reading

Columbia County commissioners gave tentative approval to a resolution Tuesday allowing the county to offer pet identification tags at a cost of $2 each.

Commissioners are expected to approve the resolution on a second reading at their April 15 meeting. At that point, the ID tags could be purchased from the Animal Care and Control office in Appling or at quarterly rabies clinics conducted by animal control officials.

Also during Tuesday's meeting in Appling, Lee Anderson resigned as the county's District 4 commissioner. Mr. Anderson faces Brett McGuire in a July 15 special election to replace state Rep. Barry Fleming for the District 117 House seat. Mr. Fleming is vacating his post to run for Georgia's 10th Congressional District seat, currently held by Paul Broun of Athens.

KUDOS to LMS administrators for inviting parents into the school during the instructional day!

These truck drivers are dangerous when carrying full loads or empty. It's really hard to stop these trucks when they're carrying several tons of waste or especially rock. That's why they should really watch their speed and obey all traffic signals and signs. He had to blow right past the stop sign.

patriciathomas

Wow! Talk about some bad karma. Get picked up for a probation violation and get killed by a large truck while riding in a police car.

The Kingfish

Patricia, Thats a big AMEN!!

Unbelievable

Yea, probation violation for being a drug dealer.

christian134

Everytime a dump or logging truck passes by me without slamming into my car I give thanks to God Amighty. Those trucks are a menace. The ones that pull in front or the ones who come flying up behind, they are all dangerous. Makes one wonder who is driving these trucks and how much experience and training they have. Poor guy wow that just is a lousy state of affairs to be killed like that.....Remember Harry Chapin-"Cat's in
the Cradle" he was killed by a trash truck in New York. The truck driver wasn't looking and ran right over his car. My goodness the caffine is working this morning...I haven't thought about that in years....

karmakills123

I think they are paid by the load...hence the need to speed.....they scare the biscuits outta me!

witness

Being a drug dealer is wrong and if you are caught, you must serve the time you are given, but the price he has paid was a very huge price for his crime. He lost his life. Show some compassion.

Chuchi

You're right, witness, and now the young man's family has an even bigger reason to weep.

The type of "truck" being driven defines the type of license a driver needs. Companies putting drivers in their vehicles will make sure the person knows how to drive, and motor vehicles needs to make sure when they issue the license. Not all truck drivers are monsters or wreckless drivers. Cars need to know how to drive WITH trucks and not be scared. A car driver needs to know what a truck driver can and cannot see from the truck and where the truck's blind spots are and drive accordingly. Of course we all know there are bad drivers in both cars and trucks and they need to be taken off the road.

WAG

How many lives did he mess up selling his drugs

waq, only his own. The others are responsible for their own actions.

Isn't it ashame that he was on his way to prison to "pay" for the crimes that he committed and now his family is going to get "paid" for his last trip to the big house. Not that I probably would not sue too, but it is a shame. I just thank God that he did not run that stop sign about 45 minutes earlier or there would have been my co-workers and school buses on that road. Thank God for little miracles of timing.

Hepkikyo

scumridder - I never though of it that way, but I believe you make a good point!

opinions

The question is "why did he run the stop sign?". Was it the thick fog that morning, was it that he didn't know that part of the area and the fog kept him from seeing the stop sign until the last minute, who knows but the person driving the truck. I am just about positive about one thing though. He didn't wake up that morning thinking I want to kill someone this morning with my truck. I believe this was just a horrible accident and something he will have to live with for the rest of his life. We all have done something while driving that we think "wow I didn't see that", then think to our self "thanks God no one was there". I am sooo sorry for the policeman and the men in his car. Something I pray will never happen to me or mine, or someone I know. If there wasn't a pre stop sign warning way out in the country then there should have been, it might have saved some one's life and alot of grief for the truck driver. Just my opinion.

Another young life loss all because of not wearing a seatbelt. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Many people have done wrong and turned thier lives around. Tim Allen was in prison for the same thing when he was a kid I believe, now look at him. He didn't deserve to die for it. The only way I could say good ridance is if he was a murderer, child molester, rapist etc... Oh yeah or a repeat offender drunk driver.. ya'll know how I hate those!!! lol My deepest sympathy for the family.

TakeAstand

Yeah they will get paid from the truck company that hit them definately shouldn't be from RC, but do you really think that's what the family wanted instead of their son, brother, father, husband etc... While being a coke dealer is bad, how do we know he didn't pick up some personal for him and a friend and got caught? Just having a good amount on you is intent to distribute even though u were only getting an extra bag for your best friend or brother. I am in no way defending his actions, but he did not deserve to die for it, it wasn't crime of the century, not even a violent crime. So no I don't think it's a shame. That's what insurance is for, you hurt or kill someone, you pay! would you sell you child to be killed for a couple hundred thousand? This is not one of those I just want to get paid things, they hopefully will be suing the right party, the truck company, which they have ever right to do.

FallingLeaves

When I was driving my children to school in the fog the other morning, a slow moving very long truck was crossing the entire highway in front of me and I could see how someone could easily have slammed into it if they were speeding, because for a few seconds, I wasn't sure what I was looking at in the fog before I realized it was the side of the trailer behind the truck. Just in time for me to slow down and stop without shaking up the kids. I am sad about the young lives lost in both the accidents above, whatever the reasons.

hello1234

KARMA...patriciathomas, what do you mean karma...that isn't karma at all...yes, him selling drugs may have not been a good thing, but him being killed definitely wasn't either...now think about if it were ur son, brother, father, grandson, nephew, cousin, etc. i guarantee you wouldn't feel the same way. some of you really need to think about the things you put on here before you do it. could you even imagine coming on here and seeing the "bad karma" comment about your loved on? my point exactly. my condolenscences are with this family!!!

sassygalady30

my heart goes out to both family the officer n the prisoner...no matter his crime he didn't have to die for it....i hope the truck drivers company paies big for this to all the familys that was hurt n this..he should even get the jail time the prisoners was serveing be fore he was killed n before he hit the other he should get jail time to show truck drivers just cause there bigger dont make them own the streets ..i see wrecks on hwy 56 all the time and it's always a trucker...and how did they get there seat belts off?was they not hand cuffed in the back???might be good they wasn't though that might be what saved the other twoes lives..who knows just making a point

sassygalady30

sorry for the typo's but y'all get it lol

Who decides what a loss of life is worth? Why is it that every time something tragic happens, there is a lawsuit? It's just too easy to file a lawsuit today. In most cases, the attorney with the 'slickest tongue' wins anyway...justified or not. If it was extremely foggy and the truck driver didn't see the stop sign until it was too late, can he sue the weather guy for not telling him that it was really foggy at that intersection and that particular time? Like everyone who posted here today, I wasn't there, so I don't know what happened, but I do know people shouldn't be so quick to throw stones!! My thoughts and prayers are with all of the families involved.

patriciathomas

hello1234, look up karma and all that it implies. I'm sorry if my writing confuses you. Study will cure that.

nurse1

Patriciathomas, u are such a dumb "female dog." Your comments and opinions just show your stupidity more and more every day. Inmate or not, this was a horrible way to die. I'm waiting to read the article saying that a "large truck" got your silly butt.
