Don't downplay Gaza rocket attacks

Hossam Fadel ("Editorial's analogy doesn't hold up," March 24th) ignores the fact that Hamas and other terrorist organizations in Gaza fire their rockets from heavily populated areas. The Israeli Defense Forces respond to ticking bombs and incessant mortar and rocket attacks -- and, since the Gaza disengagement, has shown remarkable restraint.

Hossam Fadel will be pleased to hear that Iman al-Shafi from Gaza, recently delivered healthy twins at Ashkelon's Medical Center, even as Katuysha rockets fired from the Strip rained down on Ashkelon.

Israel does not occupy Gaza; the Gaza Strip has a contiguous border with Egypt. With the disengagement from Gaza in 2005, the Israelis left hothouses to help the local economy. Palestinian terrorists destroyed these high-tech hothouses and responded with suicide bombers, kidnappings and rockets. They fired rockets into Israel during and immediately after the disengagement; the barrage of Kassam rockets and mortar fire has increased more than 500 percent since the disengagement.

When civilians are killed because terrorists put them in the line of fire, the IDF investigates. Recently, a lone terrorist murdered eight seminary students in Jerusalem. How did the Palestinians react? By passing out candy and celebrating the murder of innocents.

I visited the area in January with a group from the CSRA, Charleston, S.C., and Atlanta. Late in the day we stopped at the now-disused Erez border crossing. Our guide told us that it had been a quiet day, no rocket fire or military action. We left after 5 p.m. Later we heard that eight mortar shells landed near the border crossing. The target was a small farming village, close to the Erez crossing. These indiscriminate acts are not conducive to neighborly relations, much less peace negotiations.

Israel will always have the right... As this tiny nation has been hated for thousands of years it will continue to be a thorn in the side of evil. Evil being in the form of Palestinian's who want every Israeli dead before they will cease. To those who wrongly fuss about Israel defending itself do not forget the days long ago when schools and daycares were the daily target of annihilation. The acts of atrocities against Israel were and are just that atrocities. To not back them would be an even greater atrocity.....

From a real news paper:
JERUSALEM, April 1 -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice left Israel on Monday having failed to persuade leaders here to halt settlement construction on occupied Palestinian land. But the setback for Rice was a victory for Rabbi Ovadia Yossef, the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party.

Within hours of Rice's departure, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was on the phone with Yossef to tell him that plans for building 800 new homes in the West Bank settlement of Betar Illit had been approved, according to two Shas officials, just as Shas had requested.

The episode illustrates the extent of the small party's influence over U.S. efforts to negotiate a peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

What do you get when you mix Israeli and Palestinian diplomats together for peace talks: Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. A room full of blind men. Hee, hee.

Even evil has its supporters. I'll bet tomgahunter is a regular Dem voter.

A) The West Bank and Gaza are not the same piece of property. B) Even if the houses were being built in Gaza, I don't know what kind of chuckleheaded simpleton equates building a house with firing rockets and mortars at schoolchildren and mommies out doing the morning shopping C) I deplore some folks' immediate jump to calls of "racism" or "bigotry" every time they hear a negative comment about a particular group of people. However, there is a regular chorus of mindless drones that reliably pops up to protest Israel's refusal to sit down and let the bombs fall around their ears. I HAVE to assume that those people simply don't like Jews. Look at it this way: if a bunch of redneck white boys from the backwoods started driving through a majority-black, shooting black people because they're black and the white boys don't want them living in that area, we would all respect the residents' right to solicit police protection, or even arm themselves and fight back. I think that we would look at any attempt to tell those residents to sit down and stop "aggravating the situation" as racist. I think that we would not recognize any organization that had the stated goal of killing all black folk

When your surrounded on all sides by your enemy, you're either bad or you blink. Palestinians should thank their lucky stars the old guard is not in charge anymore. I remember when Israel would storm a plane and kill everyone aboard just to make sure the hijackers didn't live. Seems to me nobody can wrap their mind around the fact that a majority of muslims don't want to live in peace with other peoples......they want them dead!!!
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,344409,00.html if you have any doubt where you stand in the muslim world read the above article. This imam thinks if you are not muslim it is ok to rape and murder you. So unless you live over there I wouldn't be so quick to judge their actions.

I am a life long Conservative Republican.. I don't care how many of these people kill each other, I'm just tired of our tax money paying for it & the Israleies making fun of us. For thoes of you who don't know this both Sec. Rice & Pres. Bush are Republicans. Every American President has said that settlement activity is the major road block in the way of peace.

Bizarro

Wow! Newsflash the Palestinians want all the jews dead. That is just govt policy with indoctrination of their children into hate. The far-left says we do the same. Vote Obama he will punish America for all the bad stuff we have done and apparently we deserve it. Obama has the wRight message!!!!

tomgahunter

This is really wild most of these posters who are normally "Bush is RIGHT" have left him & gone over to the other side. Guess there will not be a Nobel award for President Bush & Sec. Rice.

Yes, tomga, "settlement activity" is the major roadblock to peace. I just HATE it when people build new housing developments out in COLA, so I am well within my rights to kill them. I have NEVER heard Bush say that "settlement activity" is the major roadblock to peace. I have heard Jimmy Carter say that, in effect, Israelis' insistence on continuing to live, is the major roadblock to peace, but I haven't heard Reagan or Bush, or Bush, or even Clinton, for that matter, blame homicidal whackjob cowardly bombings on anybody but the homicidal whackjobs. And you know what? Any American president who DOES say that building houses is an excuse for bombing people, just isn't paying attention, and he's wrong. I mean, we DO recognize that presidents CAN be wrong, yes? If that statement were anything other than a complete fantasy, then bombings and killings would only take place in the "settlements." Good night...it's really not rocket surgery. Every time we offer up some sort of temporizing, "Well, but the Israelis..." "Well, but America..." "Well, but those non-muslims..." we give these murdering lunatics cover. We show them how weak we are, and invite more attacks.

tomga, if you were able to read at something higher than a fourth grade level, you would see thoughtful, intelligent conservatives in this forum, criticizing George Bush CONSTANTLY. Wake up and quit arguing against positions that nobody has taken outside of your delusions...

Wyldsfarm, when did Israel board a plane and kill evryone on it? I sure don't remember it. They did rescue the hostages at Entebe where one of the passengers was killed, but I don't recall any mass killing on any aircraft by Israel. Date, time and place please. Also, I fully agree with JohnSmith. Easy to sit here fairly safe and be armchair quarterbacks when it ain't YOU or YOURS being rocketed and murdered. The rockets are often launched from the back of pickup trucks and then hide in some garage close by. I watched an Israeli film of a drone that spotted the house the truck went in and also watched it disappear. Yeah, it was in a civilian neighborhood, so go figure...

GnipGnop

I was being facetious. Maybe I should have stated that in my comment. I was pointing out the fact that a few years ago when you killed one of theirs they would try to kill 10 of yours...didn't mean it to sound like a factual event...I apologize for that.

What the hell is Hossam Fadel? If its anything like Joaquin Godoy, castor oil will get rid of it

patriciathomas

tomgahunter, I am a lifelong Democrat. I don't think it's ok for radical Islamists to lob bombs into groups of school children.

patriciathomas

Apparently for some murder and self defense are the same. I differentiate.

patriciathomas

Jake, seriously. It's ok if one of your posts makes any sense at all. Really. Break the habit. Try thinking.
