Ballot shakes out as candidates finish filing for state, local races

AIKEN --- The 2008 ballot is closer to being set.

Candidates for the federal, state and local seats up for grabs this year have finished filing to campaign for them, although potential politicians can also petition to be put on the ballot through July.

Candidates for several seats will have to be narrowed down through primaries.

Others might go completely uncontested unless a petition candidate receives enough signatures for the ballot.

Stuart Bedenbaugh, executive director of the Aiken County Voter and Registration Office, said absentee ballots can be requested now for the Nov. 4 election by calling (803) 642-2028.

The Democratic and Republican primaries will be held on June 10, and if a runoff is needed, that would be held on June 24.

Petition candidates have until July 15 to file.

That includes the non-partisan school board seats up for election this year, in addition to the Aiken County Soil and Water Conservation Commission.

Other petition seats include the Bath, Clearwater and Langley water and sewer districts.
