i think its unfair that there taking over augusta ..other cab drivers r tring to make a living as well..there cabs r over 5 years old n they do not have a radio dispatch...so how r they meeting all that the contracts ask..check them out better!!
Checker is in and Radio is out.
Beginning today, Checker Cab will begin its new contract with Fort Gordon. To get there, the company had to agree to a new set of requirements with the military installation.
"We let a contract that was a normal contract but it has a few more controls in it," said Marla Jones, spokeswoman for Fort Gordon.
Only cabs with proper identification will be allowed on post. Others will be diverted to Gate 1 and required to drop off the passengers at the visitor's center parking lot, according to James Green, who's in charge of commercial taxi cab contracts for Fort Gordon. Passengers will then be required to take approved cabs onto the base.
The new five-year contract requires that at least 20 cabs be available on weekdays and 30 be available on the weekend, Mr. Green said.
Soldiers will be charged a rate 30 percent lower than the established Richmond County rate, which should not exceed $1.26 per mile, according to Ms. Jones. Meanwhile, Checker Cabs will be required to pick up their fare within 20 minutes of the call. They must also submit their vehicles for inspection every six months and the cabs must be no more than five years old.
The contract was awarded to Checker Cab on March 27, after Radio Cab failed to submit a proposal to the fort. Radio Cab had maintained a contract with Fort Gordon for about 15 years, according to Mr. Green.

Hopefully Checker Cab will do a better job than Radio Cab did on Fort Gordon. Why does the post wants one cab company to have a monopoly on post? Competition breeds excellence. After 15 years of Radio Cab only service on post, their drivers over-charged trainees, they were rude, surly, and late.
Hey Sassy,
Do you get charged per letter when you send emails?
I Am A Cab Driver And Have Worked For Reliable Taxi For Years And I Have Never Heard Of So Much Junk Like This About Dropping Off At Gate One Junk. The Post Is Open To The Public So How Can They Do This.I Guess Checker Cab Is Tring To Start A Monopoly In Augusta.I Have And Know Of Alot Of People That Don't Like To Ride With Radio Or Checker Cab.So I Guess Them People Are Gonna Be S.O.L And Are Gonna Be Forced To Ride In Cabs They Don't Want To Ride In.
Oh And Another Thing Cabs Are Only Suppost To Be No More Than 5 Years Old And Have Radio Dispatch How About Someone Checking That Out Because Their Autos Are More Than 5 Years Old And They Don't Have Radio Dispatch They Use Cell Phones And Will Someone Tell Me How They Getting Away With That. And Most Of The Drivers That Use To Work For Radio Cab Are Now Going To Work For Checker So They Still Gonna Have The Same over-Chargers,Rude And Late Drivers.Guess Someone Out There Must Be Getting Their Pockets Lined. The IRS Also Needs To Check Into The Drivers With Radio Cab And Checker Cab And See How Many Of Them Are Filing Taxes On The Money They Make.I File Taxes Every Year On The Money I Make.Look Into It And See How Many Of Them Do.
edward no you don't get charged
in look at the rates up top.. rates have already went up.n far as checker cab i ride down 25 wed n thursday night n there sitting n the bars drinking.how is that safe for our soilders r anyone else for that matter.. i sure wouldn't ride with them..
radio cab was charging the soldiers outrageous prices and making them wait three hours for a cab. i am glad they are one. but i don't agree with just one cab company
Radio Cab has some of the worst looking vehicles on the road in any city. Checker Cab came to town with newer, cleaner, and professional looking vehicles and people took notice. Also, they actually show up when you call them. Many of the Downtown businesses got sick of calling Radio Cab because it would take forever for them to show and now, for the most part, call Checker exclusively.
The cabs in this town are horrible. Expect to wait 2 to 3 hours for one if you decide you had a few to many to drink late at night. your almost better off driving home by the time they show up.
I for one think that radio cab could have done better. I use to ride with Radio cab for a number of years and they use to have me late for work on a regular. I would call them at 5:30am for a 7:45 pickup to go to work and they would get me to work around 8:15-9am, almost causing me to lose my job. I even had some of the drivers cell numbers to schedule them to pick me up to have me to work on time. Then along came Carribean Cab, and i have been to work on time all the time every time. There cabs are clean, reliable and the drivers are very nice and well mannered. Hope Checker Cab can hold up, i thought they were also owned by radio cab.
Checker Cab won a contract that Radio Cab DID NOT BID on. 'Nuff said !
Sometimes, I cannot believe I live in a town with so many rednecks and uneducated idiots. I just wasted the last 5 minutes of my life reading over these posts, and have become that much dumber by reading them.
Anyways, Radio Cab blows. But then again, if everyone in that company comes from the trailer park, then you can't really expect more than trailer park service.
I heard the guy on the radio whining about the independent taxi companies taking his business. What? RadioCabs were raggedy, the drivers sleazy, and overcharging was going on. He acted like the cabs shouldn't be out on the weekends. No wonder they're out of business.
i agree with all of you about radio cab.i have had alot of people call me after they waited for over 30 minutes for a radio cab to pick them up. i work for an independent taxi company and we have never made anyone wait no more than 10 or 15 minutes and the company i work for only owns 3 cabs and radio had over 30 cabs go figure a little cab company can pick up people alot faster than a big cab company.tell me whats wrong with that picture.
Good to see Radio Cab is gone! I am going to try to be optomistic about the Checker Cab contract. I'm sure the base will use security as an excuse for the monopoly.
hey everyone you really know what's bad about all this people talk about how bad radio cab drivers are, well the thing is that all the drivers are going to work for checker cab so your still gonna have all the mean and hateful drivers out there.so it's not gonna be any better,as a matter of fact one of my friends from another cab company got 5 calls to pick up on post and the people that call them told them checker cab said there was a 2 hour wait, now how they gonna keep a contract with doing things like that and if you all see the rates went up on post.
