I was created "Fishboy." Not recycling may not lead to an eternity in hell, but it may result in your great-grandchildren living amidst piles of empty plastic bags and water bottles. God recycles, shouldn't you?
I agree with the letter by Anna Fellows ("Don't secularize church stewardship," March 22). Won't Al Gore and his "global warming" group ever give up? Did they ask those people in other parts of the world who recently had snow more than six feet deep about global warming?
While taking steps to keep our water and air clean is just good common sense, for a church to declare it "a sin to refuse to recycle or try to save the earth" deserves a good horse laugh. If this group was truly devoted to their cause, they would park their cars and ride bicycles rather than continue burning fossil fuel. Why is it OK to purchase oil and gasoline from Saudi Arabia, etc., but a no-no to open or drill our own oil wells? Apparently somebody is desiring that the United States shut down what few factories that haven't moved to China and elsewhere, and return us to the Stone Age.
Which brings up another subject. No, humans did not roam the earth with dinosaurs, and Noah didn't have any on his ark. God created and then destroyed such creatures as He brought a close to eon No. 1. Genesis 1:1 speaks of God's original creation of the physical world, upon which, during eon No. 1, He placed a host of weird creatures whose skeletal remains have been dug up. Genesis 1:2 and II Peter 3:5-6 speaks of it becoming "void" and "dark" at its closure. That's where the water came from in Genesis 1:2, which God began separating and clearing away for eon No. 2 to begin, the reappearing of the sun, moon and stars and the creation of humans, different kinds of animals, vegetation, etc. But humans were created as humans, monkeys created as monkeys, dogs as dogs, fish as fish, etc.

I was created a man but I evolved into Bizarro. Apparently we weren't all created equal. Some people God gave sense. hee, hee.
I agree that it is absurd for the Catholic Church to make littering sinful, but it is probably more for dramatic effect than anything. Just to get people to open their eyes.
Global warming is not just a constant heating of the entire earth, I would say climate change is more accurate a term. It gets colder in parts of the earth than normal, and warmer in other parts than normal. Like the gigantic ice shelves in antarctica breaking off, when it is actually getting colder in other parts of antarctica. Al Gore is simply trying to bring attention to the fact that mankind is directly responsibile for this. This is quickly becoming the non-partisan issue that it should always have been. Pat Robertson and Al Sharpton, two men I find abhorrent in their extremist views, who are polar opposites from each other are in agreement with this. As are Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi. Nobody is asking anyone to give up their cars. Just try to be a little more responsible with power consumption and do what you can when you can. Pretty easy, you don't even have to be a hippy. Pres. Bush even has gone green in Crawford.
Why is it so hard to see destroying Earth as a sin, when eating too much is?
Reading letters by people like J.F. Rodgers makes me understand why there are places like Clearwater, S.C.
Maybe they should change the name from Clearwater to "Murkywaters, S.C." hee, hee.
And when global changes occurred on earth before man appeared, what caused them to occur? Republicant, they are asking a lot of the less pollution producing America to do more than the more pollution producing countries India and China. I'm not against conservation and going green, just against making it a political issue.
Is this an April Fools Joke?
I'm not even talking about the big corporations. I'm talking about normal people, doing simple things like not throwing their trash on the side of the road. A simple place to start ya know?
I don't think it should be a political issue either by the way. There is obviously a natural cycle to things. If someone can prove our actions on this planet are not causiing these problems, then I would be willing to listen. This James Milloy character on Foxnews.com is a paid goon from the energy sector, and has no credibility.
But anyway it doesn't hurt anyone to not litter, or pour used oil in the woods. Start small.
Kathysue, global changes before man were natural, and led to man's evolution. Even the Southern Baptist are going green and acknowledging the global warming crisis and man's negative influence. It is about time christians stood-up for God's creation rather than constantly crowing about all the things they are against.
I don't think it is absurd for any church to declare that littering is sinful. When you litter you do many negative things. You create an eyesore by diminishing the natural beauty of a place. Your litter can emit nasty odors no one wants to smell. Carelessly discarded trash is a biohazard; it breeds bacteria, encourages the growth of viruses and spreads diseases. Wildlife and stray animals feed on improperly-disposed-of garbage and it not only can make them sick but it also encourages them to frequently venture into urbanized areas. This exposes the animals and the people to danger. When you deliberately litter you are at least committing the sin of sloth by being too lazy to do your job, and you are forcing someone else to clean up after you. I think we all have a responsibility to at least try to do what we can to take care of the gifts God gave us, the earth being one of them. I don't see this as a political issue; I see it as a moral one. So give a hoot and don't pollute, because frankly, it really is a sin.
Recycling is good stewardship. I don't know if I'd go so far to say that failing to recycle is sinful, but it is hard to deny that recycling is generally a better and more civic-minded thing to do than wasting. This is especially so in ARC, where the city trucks will pick up your recycling from the curb.
Kathysue, a lot of European countrys have mandatory recycling and most of the bigger citys charge your garbage by weight - the more you "produce" by not seperating your trash into proper recycling bins, the more you pay. A typical household may have three different garbage cans to seperate trash into.
And Europe is by far a " less pollution producing" continent then the US is. Pointing fingers to countries that polute more than us is not the answer.Getting people involved enough to start caring is.

Kathysue, for generations our nation was a great world leader because it set an example which others would follow. In recent years, the source of our "leadership" has been heavy handedness and finger pointing. As in all other things, when it comes to stewardship of the earth, we should return to being true leaders and set an example for other nations to follow.
Bizzaro you are tooo funny today! :-)
Church, if all you say is a sin, then I guess Jesus and his followers were indeed sinful in tht they weren't the cleanest folks in the world and knew NOTHING about recycling anything. They threw their garbage in the street as many in the less civilized countries still do today. I sure believe in clean air, but I don't believe burning fossil fuels, etc, are sins. As for trash, I would like to string up those around here who throw their McDonalds crap out their window or empty their ash trays on the road. However, I can't find it in my Bible where either is a sin.
But Jack-The didn't have aluminum cans and plastic cups back then, did they?
Reminds me how happy I am to have made it out.
Tree huggin liberals = The sun was going to burn out on 2000.
No, they will NOT 'shut up' because simply telling them to 'shut up' will not stop the inevitable global warming. Most humans are evidentally ignorant, wasteful, short-sighted creatures, like the one who has written this article, because global warming is 75% OUR FAULT, and we need to fix the damage that previous generations have done. Animals are vanishing from forests that have not been directly touched by humans--> global warming is taking place. Glaciers are melting, raising the ocean level and flooding low-laying coastal ecosystems--> global warming is taking place. GLOBAL WARMING IS INEVITABLE UNLESS WE HELP THE EARTH HEAL ITSELF! REDUCE, REUSE, and for god's sake, RECYCLE!!!
Sorry "in 2000"
The earth is in a delicate equilibrium, change the temperature by just a few degrees and lakes may turn in deserts, savannahs may become swamps, and permafrosted forests might just turn into humd jungles. Entire biomes will change, new animals will emerge if they can evolve fast enough, and entire families of animal species will simply die out. Frogs are 'bioalarms' because their skin is permeable and they absorb whatever is in the water or air. Any change in the environment and they are the first to feel it, and one of the last to react to it. They are very delicate and they rely on CONSISTANT climate factors to survive, because they do not evolve fast enough to adapt to new climates. I personally like frogs and would be very sad to see them disappear forever.
Y'all, I have no problem with recycling. I do it. I have a problem with the Kyoto Accord big time. I also don't think that the proof is in on man being THE cause of global warming, especially since the face of the earth has been changing the whole of its existence. A reasonable approach should be taken. American should be and is a leader and therefore should not be punished. We pollute far less than many countries. We would produce less pollution if we had nuclear plants producing most of our electricity as France does.
How about cutting back on kids. If we could get the Catholics and Mormons to cut back to 4 from 7....The idea is to be a good steward to the earth. People are using resources fewer people would use fewer resources. Or we can elect a republican and keep the war going either way it will cut down on the population.
Historically impoverished people have tended to have more kids. They don't view them as cost centers but as profit centers. That goes for all races, by the way. More kids on the farm meant more laborers. That was prior to our welfare system. Since my being taught that, I have been told by state welfare workers that it still holds true. More children mean more money in your check and the children can increase up to the point the mother does not want to have to deal with any more.
Answering the headline: NOT A SIN, BUT NOT UNWISE
Darth I love frog legs. They are delicious, but you have to cut their legs just right so they don't hop out da pan when you fry them. If you have ever read some of the studies it is amazing the number of natural sources of greenhouse gases that exceed human (of course we are natural too)production, like termites for instance. Science is a process and if you note climate modeling as an example it has yin yanged all over the place, but of late the models are proving more accurate. We are still in a "discovery stage" in climate predictions so we should be cautious. Still all indicators are the earth is a dying planet and all the models of evolution predict life cannot change fast enough to keep up with change. Populations of insects, amphibia, reptiles, etc are just diminishing world wide. The impact of bee losses on agriculture is huge. I think the "F"it has Hit the "Sh"an and it is a product of all nature (remember we are a part of nature too).
Take frog legs, pull off their skins and sprinkle salt on them. They will shake and move like they are alive. Saw the whole process, from gigging to eating when I was growing up. I do have, now, quite a liking for frogs. I have way to many frog things in and about my house and I keep getting more from friends and family who know my affinity for frogs. Can't kill one now, much less eat his legs. And I just love when a bullfrog takes up residence in my little goldfish pond, as long as he is not big enough to eat the fish.
I love to go to sleep listening to the crickets and frogs chirp and then suddenly a big bull will let out a booming call. Music to my ears. I haven't had a frog let in years, but I wouldn't turn them down.
