AUGUSTA, Ga. - COL Raymond B. Lawless age 88, husband of the late Margaret " Peg" Lawless entered into rest on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Heartland Hospice. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 31, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Augusta, GA with Reverend Robert M. Watkins, Karla Conditt-Daniels officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery on May 30th 2008 at 9:00 a.m. COL Raymond B. Lawless was a native of Worthington, Ohio having made Augusta, GA. his home for the past 33 years. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Augusta, The Free and Accepted Masons; Moslah Temple Shrine, and the National Sojourners. Ray entered active service with the Ohio National Guard, 37th Inf. Div., 74th Inf. Bde, HHQ (Later designated the 37th Recon Troop). He served at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania before overseas departure in the spring of 1942 to serve with the 37th Recon Troop in New Zealand, Fiji Islands and Guadalcanal. Ray progressed through the enlisted ranks from Private to First Sergeant before departing the unit in April 1943 for Officers Candidate School (OCS). Upon graduating from OCS as a 2nd LT, Signal Corps, he returned overseas to serve in the Persian Gulf Command, Iran. In December 1945, he was released from active service as a 1st LT, U.S. Army Reserves. LT Lawless was recalled in 1948 during the Berlin Airlift. Served in various command and staff positions: 82nd Abn Div; Commander, STRATCOM LLBN; Office of Chief Signal Officer; Army Material Command; Office of Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, DA; Senior Advisor; and Deputy Commander, STRATCOM Group. He served in various commands worldwide: Okinawa, Hawaii, Korea, HQ USAREUR, Europe, Washington D.C, Lexington Army Depot, Fort Gordon, GA, Vietnam and Fort Monroe, VA. Ray retired on July 31, 1975. Upon retirement, he worked in the field of education, working for Dekalb Community College and Georgia Military College at Fort Gordon, GA as Associate Director. COL Lawless is survived by his three sons, Tom Lawless and his wife Dorothy of Crofton, MD, Mike Lawless and his wife Cassie of Colorado Springs, CO, and Rick Lawless and his wife Benita of Evans, GA; and his seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 31, 2008 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
