AUGUSTA, Ga. - Rev. Dr. Emmett Thomas Martin, Jr., of Shadowood Drive entered into rest Thursday, March 27, 2008 at his residence. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 11:a.m. at Historic Springfield Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Hill, Sr., officiating. Burial will be at the church. Rev. Martin, a native of Augusta, was a 1956 graduate of Lucy Laney High School and a 1960 graduate of Benedict College. In 1997, he received a Master of Divinity from Jacksonville Theological Seminary (Lahairoi Bible College) and a Doctor of Ministry in 2002 from Lake Charles Bible College, Lake Charles, LA. He served as pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, Louisville, GA from 1960 to 1972 and as pastor of Historic Springfield Baptist Church from 1972 to the present. His affiliations were the National Baptist Convention, USA, General Missionary Convention of Georgia, former Dean and President of the Congress of Christian Education for Walker Baptist Association, Vice President of Springfield Village Park Foundation Board of Directors, University Hospital Clergy Staff, Hope Home Board of Directors, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Rev. Martin taught at A. R. Johnson Jr., High School was former assistant manager of Conger Insurance and former staff member of Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company. Numerous honors awarded included Inductee into Morehouse Georgia Board of Reverend Preachers in 1996 and Mayor's Proclamation declaring December 7, 1996 as E. T. Martin Day in Augusta. Survivors are his wife, Betty R. Martin; one sister, Virginia (James) Barnes, Hephzibah; one brother, Alonza (Mildred) Martin, Sr., Augusta; a host of nieces and nephews; Godchildren, Annette Barnes, Alonza I. Martin, Jr., Melissa Johnson, Dr. Olivia Copeland, Allegra Johnson, Gerald Johnson, Maniqwa Jones; sisters-in-law, Mary (Cluese) Lyons and Josephine Ruffin; other relatives. Memorial contributions may be made to Historic Springfield Baptist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends, Monday, 5 to 7:p.m. at the funeral Home.
