Teacher honored

Candida Thompson, a Spanish teacher at the Academy of Richmond County, has been named the 2008 Foreign Language Alliance for International Rapport's Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

At leaders conference

Hillcrest Baptist School seventh-graders Amber Evans, daughter of Eric and Wanda Evans, and Kendall M. McCormick, son of Alethia and Kenneth McCormick, are attending the 2008 Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington through Saturday.

Earns master's degree

Suzanne Devkota , of Augusta, has earned a master of science degree in nutritional science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Library resources

The Morris Museum of Art, the Reese Library at Augusta State University and the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History have received Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a set of conservation books, DVDs and online resources from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Association for State and Local History.

Gets research grant

Kristine Merriman , of Augusta, a senior archaeology, chemistry and classical humanities major at George Washington University, has received a $1,000 fellowship from the William Warren Endowment Trust to cover expenses during the Megiddo archaeological excavation this summer near Haifa, Israel.

Make dean's list

- Claire Audrey Sims , of Augusta, has been named to dean's list at Seattle Pacific University.

- Mary Amanda Middlebrooks , a native of Augusta, has been named to the dean's list at Shorter College, Rome, Ga.

Honor student

Sarah A. Gibson, of Augusta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Gibson, has been named an honor student at Phillips Exeter Academy, N.H.

Student of year

William K. Phillips, an Augusta State University student, has been chosen as the University Student of the Year by the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Among his honors and awards are membership in Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society, and Alpha Mu Gamma, the collegiate foreign language honor society. He also received two scholarships from Phi Kappa Phi to study in Spain.

In leadership forum

William Jackson Fleming, of Augusta, took part in the People to People World Leadership Forum. He joined a group of students in Washington from March 10-16 to earn high school credit while studying leadership and visiting prominent monuments and institutions.
