AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Mary Earle Broome McGowan, born January 4, 1930, entered into rest on Sunday, March 23, 2008, from complications of a stroke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melissa Collins Broome and Christopher Earl Broome, and nieces, Ware Sanders and Ann Peacock, a sister-in-law, Gene Sanders and a brother-in-law, Bob Sanders. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Harriette Simmons of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Mary was married to Henri Charbonnier (Hank) McGowan for 48 years before his death, June 6, 1995. Mary was Homecoming Queen at Burke County High School and Augusta College. After her children went to college, Mary pursued a career in real estate. Upon retirement Mary divided her time between homes in Little Switzerland, North Carolina, Augusta, and Hilton Head. She had a love of the road and traveled between homes every three days. Mary was a member of the Million Dollar Club, the Augusta Country Club, the Junior League of Augusta, Geneva Hall and Sea Pines. She was a devoted Episcopalian and attended St. Augustine's Episcopal Church for 45 years. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Henri (Hank) McGowan, III and Patti, their children, Henri McGowan, IV and Clifford Steele McGowan, a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry McGowan Means and Bo, their children, Missy Means Madden and husband Patrick, and Andy Means, 1 great grandchild, Andy Madden. Additional survivors include a sister-in-law, Peggy Peacock and a brother-in-law, Lowell Peacock, nieces and nephews, Gene Herrington, Bob Sanders, Boo Sanders, Ray Peacock, and Farrow Peacock and their families, and her loving caretaker, Pat Lawson.
