Man is charged with infecting pregnant girlfriend with HIV

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- A South Carolina man with HIV was in jail Friday, accused of infecting his girlfriend, who is pregnant with twins, authorities said.

Gregory Sean Martinez, 39, did not tell his 24-year-old girlfriend that he had HIV until after she discovered she had contracted the virus during a prenatal checkup, a police report said.

Mr. Martinez was charged with exposing someone to HIV and faces up to 10 years in prison or a $5,000 fine.

Authorities did not know if he had an attorney, and a telephone message left for him Friday was not immediately returned.

Mr. Martinez contracted the virus in 2002 and never told the woman he met four years later. He also never suggested safer sex, according to the police report.

The woman's name was not released by police. She is 23 weeks' pregnant, and police are not sure if the twins have contracted the virus.

A Spartanburg County sheriff's spokesman said Mr. Martinez had apologized to the woman, who now lives in Florida. Sheriff's Maj. Dan Johnson said Mr. Martinez didn't want to tell the woman he had HIV because he didn't want her to leave him.

Police said they don't know whether Mr. Martinez has infected anyone else.

This man deserves no considerations when it comes to punishment. Inflicting this disease on unsuspecting women and in this cases two unborn babies is attempted murder or possibly murder.

He should get the death penalty considering he has ruined their lives and possibly murdered these three people!

What he did to that woman and possibly her twins is inexcusable and murderous. He should be treated exactly as if he'd shot her with a gun or stabbed her with a knife. He has changed her life forever. Who knows how many other women he has 'attacked' with his condition. I know the naysayers will say the woman should have kept her legs together until she personally knew his health history but as far as I'm concerned the man is, quite literally, a loaded gun waiting for a victim. I wish the judge would get him for the maximum sentence times three - one sentence for each of his victims, the woman and her unborn twins.

Looks like she left him anyway. Up to 10 years in prison and $5000. Not enough. Another law that needs changing. How do we help do it?

WHATDIDIDO

I am sorry that I murdered you. Yeah right.
