"Walking the Way of the Cross is done in many places around the world," said Nancy Garner, an organizer of the event. "So this isn't just an event in south Augusta."

Participants will walk about 1.5 miles from Burns Memorial United Methodist Church on Lumpkin Road to St. Joseph Catholic Church, also on Lumpkin Road. In between there will be stops at Ascension Lutheran Church on Wells Drive and Hillcrest Baptist Church on Deans Bridge Road.

At stops along the way there will be singing, Scripture reading and reflection, Mrs. Garner said.

"We encourage people to bring their cross, big or little, to carry with them to remind them why we are doing the walk," she said.

Last year, more than 500 people from various congregations participated.

Mrs. Garner hopes that the event will encourage people to reflect on Good Friday and Easter.

"I encourage families to come. It's a way for them to become focused on the true meaning of Easter," she said. "I hope they will take Good Friday, not as a holiday away from work or school, but as a day to reflect on Christ's passion."

The South Augusta Pastors Alliance is interdenominational and interracial organization. The Good Friday Way of the Cross march is one of several events the alliance sponsors each year.
