Columbia County twister upgraded to EF1 storm

Saturday's tornado that raced through Columbia County was more powerful than initially thought.

The National Weather Service upgraded the tornado Tuesday from an EF0 to an EF1. The assessment was based on a Monday inspection of damaged trees and mobile homes along Ray Owens Road near Appling, said Pam Tucker, Columbia County's emergency services director.

Under the Enhanced Fujita scale of tornado intensity, an EF1 storm has wind speeds of 86 to 110 mph that can overturn and severely damage mobile homes. An EF0 storm's winds are of a lower velocity and typically result only in uprooted trees and broken branches.

The Columbia County tornado was among at least seven twisters that formed Saturday across east-central Georgia and South Carolina.

More rainy, but less severe, weather on way

A region still recovering from Saturday's storms and tornados could see more bad weather later today. However, weather officials said they don't expect a repeat of the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, there's a 70 percent chance of rain by this afternoon, and a slight chance of more severe weather, said Tina Morrison, a meteorologist in Columbia.

"It won't be as serious as Saturday's (storm system), but there's a chance that there could be severe thunderstorms or even an isolated tornado," she said.

The storm system will move through the area between 3 and 10 p.m., Ms. Morrison said.

Coliseum committee to seek management

An Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority search committee voted Tuesday to seek a management company to manage James Brown Arena and Bell Auditorium.

The committee agreed a management company could bring in more and better shows.

New Facilities Manager Julie Huggins is to start work today at the direction of Chairman Harry Moore. However, Janice Jenkins, the Personnel Committee chairwoman, said Ms. Huggins would be fired if she shows up because of questions raised over her application by board members.

Commission approval allows dogs at parks

Augusta commissioners amended a county ordinance Tuesday that will allow dogs at city parks. The approval will open the Botanical Gardens at the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame property to dogs and their owners on Sundays from 1 until 4 p.m., starting April 6.

Also Tuesday, commissioners voted to keep Club Platinum, at 1505 North Leg Road, on 90 days' probation, add four deputies in the parking lot and close by 11:30 p.m.

Commissioners also approved the appointment of Charles Smith and S. Renee D'Antignac to the Board of Tax Assessors; John Butler to the Housing Citizens Advisory Board; Anthony Franklin to the Small Business Citizens Advisory Board; Jacinda Z. Norvell to the Augusta Aviation Commission; and F. Marion Durst IV to the Richmond County Board of Health.

Federal agents tally drugs at pharmacy

Prescription drugs were being logged at a local pharmacy after it closed Tuesday, according to Richmond County Sheriff's Investigator Robin Ashmore.

Brynwood Pharmacy, 3547 Walton Way, closed Tuesday afternoon.

Federal Drug Enforcement Agency investigators were on hand to handle the narcotics, Investigator Ashmore said, and so were Richmond County Sheriff's deputies.

Alternative school to hold informative event

Bungalow Road Alternative School, 2216 Bungalow Road, will hold a special program for parents at 6 p.m. Monday.

Failure Is Not an Option will introduce the school's new principals, explain the tribunal process and discuss the evening school and Project Next Steps.

There will also be information on the new graduation requirements, Saturday school, Street Law 101 and the Ounce of Prevention Services Program.

Area traffic report

- The threat of bad weather forced the postponement of a road closure until Thursday. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Park West Drive between Jimmie Dyess Parkway and Wrightsboro Road will be closed while work crews replace a sewer manhole near the intersection of Park West and CDP Industrial Boulevard, according to a Columbia County news release. Motorists should use an alternate route.

If they're going to upgrade a storm after the fact, why not go ahead and make it an f-5? I'd really be impressed then.

patriciathomas

The coliseum authority is very funny. I'm glad they're paid from the tax coffers. Wasting money makes Augusta look wealthy.

patriciathomas

If I take my dog to the Botanical Garden and Golf Hall of Fame dog park and I'm bitten by someones dog (other then mine) can I sue the city? Just trying to plan ahead.

patriciathomas

A big atta-boy to the Alternative school for their on going effort.

Itll be alright

Patricia, you would be thinking about suing. ATTA-GIRL PT.

patriciathomas

angie, I was just planning to walk my dog. Where to go and where to avoid. What were you thinking?

AugustaVoter

"Federal agents tally drugs at pharmacy". One question for this news blip, Why? What happened? Did the pharmacy close for good? Was this an inventory process? What good does it do to put that in the articles if you don't explain the story? WTH, AC!?

AugustaVoter

PT why would you go to the gardens to walk your dog for only three hours a week when you can do it just about anywhere else anytime of day? I guess the commission didn't want the dogs to be there too long and make more excrement than the commission already does...

OMG

wow patricia that is why augusta can't have anything decent because of people like you. i'm sure you are always the first to complain about everything.

i know

I am going to be at the dog park the day it opens. I am going to hang meat all over me and then run like a mad man. When I get a good pack of dogs following me, off to the streets I will go. We should be able to get some good target pratice in. DO NOT SWERVE FOR DOGS UNLESS THEY ARE TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY.

halffull

What happens to "New Facilities Manager Julie Huggins" when a management company is hired. Would we still need her to manage the management company or would she be paid as a manager by the management company? Or may we will be blessed to have a manager and a management company. Who is managing this process?

augusta49

I agree with you augustavoter. I was thinking the same thing. That was a VERY VAGUE story. The Chronicle needs to explain things or just don't put it in there. Sounds written by a child.

Getaclue, you are hilarious. metoo, if Julie Huggins shows up to work today, she will be fired. That was stated in the article. Angie, get off Patricia's back. Starting to believe that you are a bit jealous of patriciathomas.

getalife

The James Brown arena board is clueless. Hire a person and then tell her if she comes to work she will be fired?? Doesn't make much sense, but that's the board at work?? Getaclue, you are funny, be careful of those people running over the dogs, they may get you!!

betruthful

Julie Huggins is nothing but a liar and so is Harry Moore. She lied about her title at her previous job and when she couldn't get her lie straight - the slave masters wanted her and brought her in. Harry Moore is an ignorant red neck and will never want to do the right thing. The board members that try to do the right thing are always under fire. Julie Huggins was a rental manager at the Morocco Shrine in Jacksonville. She made up the title of Director of Operations and fixed her resume to look as if she was in a higher position than what she actually was. Julie and Harry will make a good couple - they are such big liars. What company do you know that would hire a person that lies about their previous work history?

FallingLeaves

getaclue, you are being very naughty. (So why am I laughing?) Thanks for the laugh. I don't know if I could keep my car straight if I realized it was an animal in danger. I've had some close calls and I've discovered, as I suspected, that I automatically react to a flash of movement, at least a little. I try very hard to combat that, so that I don't endanger myself and my passengers or anyone else on the road nearby.

NicoleKelly

So right on @ betruthful!!!!!!! She's a liar... But you don't hear anyone ranting about that. She's not qualified!!!!!!!! Associates degree in Arts is the only degree this woman has.

juliebac

patriciathomas...get a life...find something else to complain about, okay...good grief...you seem to complain about everything, and I do mean everything in the paper...move!

NicoleKelly

Cant agree with you enough @ juliebac... PatricaThomas get a life and a clue. You complain and talk about everyone under the sun...... You and your get a long gang are always making false statements. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!

FallingLeaves

ooooooo. LOL. patriciathomas keep on posting. none of us agree about everything, but I have learned a lot from patricia. Nicole, I know you are going through a roughspot, but have you considered punching a pillow instead of complaining about people doing the same things you and juliebac are doing?

FallingLeaves

Too bad we don't have weather/emergency alert sirens.

patriciathomas

NicoleKelly, read be good. you try. you learn. people no laugh at you. (like now)

getalife

Juliebac and Nicolekelly, why condemn PT for the doing the same thing you are doing, stating an opinion. While I don't always agree with everyone in the comment sections, I do respect their opinion.

FallingLeaves

betruthful, someone that calls whites slave masters and rednecks (You), has no credibility with me when her or she calls others racists. And you had the nerve to tell someone not to call names? Look in the mirror, what do you see? I don't think I have to tell you.
