Spring Sports

Spring sports stats due on Wednesday

Individual player statistics for baseball, softball and soccer are due every Wednesday by 5 p.m., no exceptions.

The Augusta Chronicle will publish a listing of area leaders in the following baseball and softball categories: batting average, doubles, home runs, hits, runs batted in, on-base percentage and stolen bases. Pitching categories will be overall record, earned run average and strikeouts. Soccer statistical listings will include goals and assists, plus keeper categories for saves and goals against average.

The weekly stats will run each Friday.

Junior Golf

Carter wins Bartram Trail Junior Classic

In Evans, Brian Carter , of Augusta, defended his overall title at the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour's Bartram Trail Classic, shooting 69-69 for a 6-under-par 138 total and a five-shot victory in the Male 16-19 division.

Ashlan Ramsey , of Augusta, was second after 77-72 in the Female 12-14 division. Augusta's Shannon Aubert was third after 78-73.

In the Male 14-15 division, Evans' Cody Shafer (82-70) and Augusta's Davis Parker (78-74) tied for second.

Emmanuel Kountakis , of Martinez, won by four strokes in the Male 12-13 division after shooting 74-73.

Gamecocks walk-on arrested at festival

In Columbia, S.C., police say South Carolina senior walk-on safety Michael Newton was charged with disorderly conduct during a St. Patrick's Day festival in the bar and restaurant district near the downtown campus.

Panthers sign free agent WR Hackett

Free agent wideout D.J. Hackett agreed to two-year, $3.5 million deal with Carolina as the Panthers continued to upgrade their receiving corps.

The Panthers have been busy trying to get star receiver Steve Smith help after he faced constant double-teams last season. The Panthers signed receiver Muhsin Muhammad in February.

- Dan Klecko signed a 2-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, who plan to convert him from defensive tackle to fullback.

Wild top Avalanche, move into top spot

In St. Paul, Minn., Brent Burns and Branko Radivojevic scored, Niklas Backstrom stopped 29 shots, and the Minnesota Wild took over sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division with a 3-1 victory over second-place Colorado on Monday night.

College Baseball

Jaguars drop tight game to Armstrong

Augusta State just missed out on sweeping a three game series, falling 9-8 to Armstrong Atlantic at Jaguar Field.

Augusta State will play at Paine today at 2 p.m.

- The USC Aiken baseball team continued its ascent up the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Division II Top 30 poll, moving up one spot to No. 9.

College Softball

USC Aiken splits with Davis & Elkins

In Aiken, Kristen Cochran pitched a complete game to give USC Aiken a 6-1 win in Game 1 against Davis & Elkins.

The Pacers (15-20) lost the second game, 2-0.

College Tennis

Pacers not rusty in return from layoff

In Due West, S.C., No. 20 USC Aiken returned from a 16-day layoff, shutting out Erskine, 9-0.

The Pacers improved their record to 6-4 on the season.
