Authorities expand search off island for missing couple

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- The search for a couple missing for almost two weeks has expanded beyond this resort island, and authorities were continuing to analyze two suicide notes left by a business executive questioned by police, a sheriff said Friday.

John and Elizabeth Calvert, who live part time on a yacht at the Harbour Town marina they lease and manage, were last seen March 3. Police think Dennis Ray Gerwing, a business associate of the couple who was found dead in his condominium this week, was the last person to see the Calverts.

"We're not only looking at areas on Hilton Head but off Hilton Head as well," Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said. "I can just tell you it has expanded quite a bit over the past 11 days."

He refused to give any further details about the ongoing search.

The sheriff did say deputies had searched rental units managed by the Calverts and Mr. Gerwing's boat, but would not say what, if anything, was found.

Sheriff Tanner said two notes found at Mr. Gerwing's condominium are being analyzed by the State Law Enforcement Division but he would not talk about their contents. The agency did not immediately return a phone message Friday.

"Even though I have seen those notes, I'm going to let someone else analyze those notes," Sheriff Tanner said.

Mr. Gerwing's body was found in a bathroom by his attorney shortly after authorities identified him as a person of interest in the Calverts' disappearance.

Attorney Dan Saxon told The Associated Press he found one suicide note on the bed but did not know exactly what it said.

Mr. Saxon said he had spoken with Mr. Gerwing the previous evening and there was no sign of trouble. The death, he said, "was a complete shock."

Mr. Gerwing, 54, was the chief financial officer of The Club Group, which the Calverts hired more than two years ago to help administer their business. In December, the Calverts decided they no longer needed the company and were transitioning from its services.

Also Friday, the sheriff ruled out foul play in Mr. Gerwing's death. He had previously said that Mr. Gerwing died of an apparent suicide by slashing his inner thigh with a knife.
