William Carmichael (JOHNS ISLAND, S.C.)

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. - William "Wayne" Carmichael, Sr. 74, of Johns Island, husband of Betty Clements Hendrix Carmichael died Tuesday, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Wayne was born in Cades, SC on November 27, 1933 and was the son of the Reverend and Mrs. Kayton Carmichael. As the son of a Methodist minister, Wayne and his family traveled and lived in many places throughout the state of SC. In September 1989, Wayne retired as a Master Sergeant from the SC Army National Guard, after 27 years of service with Co C, 122nd Engineer Battalion (Combat) in Graniteville. In 1992, Wayne retired from Savannah River Plant, and later moved to Charleston where in February 2000, he married Betty, a former Lynchburg High schoolmate. Wayne attended Wofford and Newberry Colleges, but his love was everything orange and the Clemson Tigers. Wayne served as Master of the Albert M. Pike Masonic Lodge #174 in Langley, SC in 1968, and was currently a member of the Fidelity Masonic Lodge #304, Johns Island, Federated Craft #103, The Charleston Scottish Rite Temple, and in 2002 served as the Worthy Patron of Carolina Chapter 25 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church of Johns Island. In healthier times he loved Saturday morning lodge breakfasts, Top of the Line Bus Tours with family and friends, feeding the fish in his pond, riding his four wheelers and sitting by a nice outdoor fire. Survivors including his wife are son: Col William W. Carmichael, Jr. US Army of Korea; daughter: Sharron K. Carmichael of Fort Lauderdale, FL; son: Heyward S. Carmichael of Brigantine, NJ; step son: Marion Hendrix, Jr. of Summerville, SC; brothers and sister: Spencer Carmichael of Camden, SC, Marsden Carmichael of Sevierville, TN and Emma "Lou" Labruzzo of Murrells Inlet, SC. Wayne will be dearly missed by his hospital bed buddy, Scooter the Cat. Wayne was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Alton. Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 10 o'clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville, SC. Burial with military honors will be held at 2 o'clock at Lynchburg Presbyterian Cemetery, Highway 341, Lynchburg, SC. After the burial, friends and family may gather for refreshments at Edgar Clements residence at 1953 East Lynches River Road, Timmonsville, SC. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 8 o'clock Friday evening.
