GLOVERVILLE, S.C. - Entered into rest Monday, March 3rd, 2008, Mr. Joseph T. Baker, 92, of Gloverville, SC, beloved husband of fifty- five years to the late Sophie Duncan Baker and son of the late Alex C. and Mattie Hydrick Baker. Born in and a lifelong resident of Gloverville, SC, he retired as the owner and operator of Baker Dry Cleaners after thirty-two years of service. A World War II Veteran and of one the last remaining members of 'the Greatest American Generation', he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Langley United Methodist Church, Langley, SC, the American Legion and the Horse Creek Valley Masonic Lodge, # 174, A.F.M. Mr. Baker liked to fish, hunt, and plant a garden. He was an animal lover and at one time was considered the neighborhood caretaker of sick, injured, and lost animals. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the VA Medical Centers of Augusta, GA and Charleston, SC, Shadow Oaks Assisted Living, Aiken, SC, and the Victory House in Walterboro, SC. Family members include a daughter, Jacqueline 'Jackie' Baker, Burnettown, SC; brother, Ladson Baker, Graniteville, SC and the late Junior Baker, sisters, the late Loritha B. Atkinson and the late Gloria B. Blackwell, sister-in-law and husband, Delores and Iradell Goodwin, Gloverville, SC; grandchildren, Lori Swint, Clearwater, SC and Bryan Black, Gloverville, SC; and great-granddaughters, Sophie and Gracie Swint. The family has asked, that if so desired, memorials in his memory be made to Langley United Methodist Church or the Aiken County S.P.C.A. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 5th, 2008, at 2 o'clock at Langley United Methodist Church, Langley, SC, with Pastor Wade Everett and Pastor Larry Gregory officiating. Interment with military honors accorded by the United States Navy and Masonic rites accorded by the Horse Creek Valley Lodge #174, A.F.M., will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Graniteville, SC. Pallbearers will be Bubba Baker, Link Atkinson, Tommy Muszall, Gerald Baker, Travis Smith, and Kenny Atkins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Langley United Methodist Men.
