WASHINGTON
Perdue announces his support for McCain
WASHINGTON --- Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue dropped his silence on the Republican presidential race Monday and said Arizona Sen. John McCain deserves the nomination.
"I think he's the right leader at the right time," Mr. Perdue said shortly after announcing his endorsement in Washington.
Mr. Perdue said Mr. McCain is uniquely qualified on the two most pressing issues of the day: national security and the economy.
Mr. Perdue had remained neutral through the state's Feb. 5 presidential primary, which Mr. McCain narrowly lost to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. Mr. Huckabee took 34 percent of the vote to Mr. McCain's 32 percent and about 30 percent for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
Mr. Perdue, who offered kind words for Mr. Huckabee when he visited Atlanta earlier this year, wouldn't specify whether Mr. McCain was his first choice all along, saying could have supported any of the GOP candidates.
