Augusta trying to stay afloat

Seven weeks ago, the Augusta Lynx appeared headed for one of their strongest regular seasons ever and a top-four playoff seed in the competitive ECHL South Division.

The Lynx were only two points out of second place and were on pace to break the franchise record of 39 wins in a season.

Less than two months later, the drop through the standings has been a nightmare.

The Augusta Lynx (26-25-1-3) have lost three in a row and six of their past seven games. They've dropped all the way down to seventh place in the standings and sit 14 points away from fourth place and the coveted home-ice advantage in the first round of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The Lynx aren't in any real danger of missing the playoffs. Of the nine South Division teams, eight of them will reach postseason play. The Lynx are 17 points ahead of the current odd-team out, the Pensacola Ice Pilots.

TRADE COMPLETED: The Lynx picked up another defensman last week when they acquired B.J. Crum from Johnstown to complete a trade that sent defenseman Justin Coutu to the Chiefs on Dec. 5. Crum, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound rookie, will help fill the defensive void left by Brian Yandle , who announced his retirement two weeks ago.

THIRD TRIP: Lynx forward Ryan Dingle once again has been called up to the American Hockey League to suit up for the Portland Pirates. Dingle started the season in Portland, was sent down to the Lynx in November, went back up a month later, and then was sent back down in January.

ALL IN A NAME: Lynx rookie Bobby Bolt has been trying to make a name for himself in the ECHL. Little did he know, he already had one. The Hockey News deemed Bobby Bolt the best name in all of hockey in its recent publication.

"I never saw that coming," Bolt said. "I've heard I had a nice name but nothing like this. I found out about it when my girlfriend called me and started freaking out. I've gotten some calls and e-mails."
