There are ways to save

With gas prices continuing to climb, filling up can leave drivers dismayed at the pump. Judy Reville, the division manager of the Augusta AAA, offers some tips on how to cut down on the times you pump gas, and money, into the tank.

SLOW AND STEADY

Keeping your speed down and consistent can conserve fuel. Avoid stop-and-go routes, consolidate errands and keep an eye out for low prices.

"The prices are going to be different from one part of town to the other," Mrs. Reville said.

AAA's Fuel Cost Calculator has the Southeast region's average at $3.14, so this is applicable in trips outside the area, too.

KEEP YOUR CAR IN TOP SHAPE

Take your vehicle in for regular service and regulate the air pressure in your tires for maximum fuel efficiency.

PACK LIGHT

Driving around with a heavy load can use more fuel.

"Empty out your trunk of all that stuff you're carrying around," Mrs. Reville advises.

MAKE WISE VEHICLE DECISIONS

If you have a compact car and a sport utility vehicle, use the one with the higher efficiency. When buying your next automobile, take gas prices into consideration and buy the one with the highest fuel efficiency. Carpool whenever possible.

Just My Opinion

You know, I'm not knocking these tips, but we've heard them many, many times. Why not get some really good tips that'll help us save money on gas? How about checking with somebody in the business to tell us if there is a certain day of the week that gas prices tend to be raised or lowered...if that's possible. Find out why 2 gas stations, owned by the same exact company, have 2 different prices per gallon, yet they are only a couple of miles apart? Is it better to just pump in a few gallons at a time, rather than fill up the tank, in order to possibly save on finding a better price? Should we actually tell the station attendant that the reason we're getting our gas at that particular station on that particular day is because the gas is the cheapest, hoping that they'll tell management, who will get the idea that if they keep prices down, people will come?? I think those are the questions that we could all see more value in the answers. But, thanks for the other info also, because you know some people don't realize those things.

The problem is with the stats. As with heating and cooling tips. If you did all they suggest, you would have "zero" cost. Now that is impossible. I replaced a "thirty year old " heating and ac unit with a 13 rating unit and my electric and gas has not gone down. By the literature, I should have had a 40% savings. Same kilowatts, same cubit feet of gas. Go figure. Another "federal government con job.
