Judge grants back pay to retired educators
ATLANTA --- A judge is granting about 15,000 retired Georgia educators back pay as part of a class-action lawsuit against the state's teachers retirement system.
The tab for the court order released Friday could run as high as $500 million. Senior Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alice Bonner says the money will come out of the retirement system's reserves and won't affect benefits for future retirees.
The lawsuit, filed in 2004, claimed the state used incorrect data to determine the life expectancy of teachers, meaning retirees got less money than they were due. The state Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that the retirement system was liable for the payments.
Rapper's daughter dies in shooting of family
ATLANTA --- Rap star Juvenile is "shocked and devastated" by the shooting death of his young daughter, the girl's mother and another child, his manager said Saturday.
The 32-year-old rapper is still trying to cope with the death of 4-year-old Jelani; her mother, 39-year-old Joy Deleston; and the woman's daughter Micaiah, 11, whose bodies were found Thursday night in their home, said manager Aubrey Francis.
Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr., 17, is being held in the DeKalb County jail, charged in the deaths of his mother -- a Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy -- and sisters. He was arrested Friday.
