"When the doors open, there are people waiting in line," said Amanda Williams, the public relations chairwoman for the Junior League of Augusta, which will have its 56th annual Attic Sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Augusta Exchange Club Fairgrounds.

The most popular merchandise at the sale is children's items and furniture, she said.

"We use a whole building for children's clothes, toys and baby items," she said.

The Junior League of Augusta started in 1926 as the Junior Workers. The group of about 200 has a mission of "women building a better community," she said. The organization promotes volunteerism and raises money to benefit the community.

Each year, the organization provides community grants. Junior League of Augusta volunteers donate time and resources to area organizations such as the Interfaith Hospitality Network and the Ronald McDonald House.

Funds from previous attic sales have benefited those projects and helped to develop a children's playground at Pendleton King Park.
