Make dean's list

- The following area students have been named to the dean's list at Furman University, Greenville, S.C.:

Keegan A. Dyer, Alexander H. Henderson, Kimberly M. Hoover, Sally A. McKinsey, Caitlin E. McMurtrie, Jennifer G. McNamee and Sinziana Ungureanu , Aiken; and Kathryn E. Conyers , North Augusta.

- Lindsay A. King and Christopher E. Radford , both of Aiken, were named to the dean's list for the fall 2007 semester at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg.

Students of month

The following pupils have been named Students of the Month for February at North Augusta Middle School:

Beverly Herrington, Lindsey Waldrup, Trevor W. Hutto, Darian Lanham, Angel Watts and Jordan Gamble .

On wildlife show

P.J. Perea , of Aiken, was featured recently on Get in the Game , a National Wild Turkey Federation television show on The Outdoor Channel.

Counting up wins

MathCounts teams represented Edgefield County middle schools well Feb. 9 at the Regional MathCounts Competition at Aiken Technical College. Merriwether Middle School's team came in second, with five pupils making the countdown round. Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School's team came in fifth, with T.J Parkman placing third in the countdown round and first overall in the individual scoring. Both schools will be represented at the State MathCounts Competition March 1 at Clemson University.

Writing awards

Area winners in the Lt. Governor's Writing Awards were:

Fifth grade -- Olivia Noelle Vaughn , Belvedere Elementary, Aiken County; and Mortrez Coleman , Douglas Elementary, Edgefield County.

Eighth grade -- Sami Cool , Kennedy Middle, Aiken County; and Brandi Jackson , Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School, Edgefield County.

Gets service award

Nikia LaPaige Brighthop , a senior at Strom Thurmond High School, has received a President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

In leadership class

Anthony Ateca , of USC Aiken, is a member of the Leadership South Carolina Class of 2008.

Battalion honored

The Wagener-Salley War Eagle Battalion received the highest rating possible, Honor Unit with Distinction, on Feb. 14 at the formal inspection of the school's JROTC unit.

USC Aiken gets honor

The Corporation for National and Community Service named the University of South Carolina Aiken to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youths.
