Judge denies bond for 7 slaying suspects

Seven of eight men charged in the Christmas Eve shotgun slaying of 20-year-old Jeremy Leaphart were denied bond Thursday.

Judge Clifton Newman refused to set bail for the men, who are charged with either accessory after the fact, murder or kidnapping. The eighth defendant, 16-year-old John Oakman Jr., did not appear in court.

Denied bond were: Johnnie Walker, 28; Sheldon Oakman, 20; Ronnie C. Bowers Jr., 18; Frankie L. Gantt, 17, who authorities say was the shooter; Marion F. Abner Jr., 19; Andre A. Norris, 26; and Darrell L. Williams, 24.

Authorities say they believe Mr. Leaphart, of Batesburg, was killed after he could not produce guns he was asked to keep. Some of the men are accused of driving Mr. Leaphart to the location he was killed at and then helping hide his body.

Judge sets bond for accused molester

A judge set a $105,000 bond Thursday for a church youth pastor accused of child molestation.

Falcon U. Davis, 37, of North Augusta, was arrested last month by Richmond County sheriff's investigators on three counts of child molestation after an accusation that he had sexual contact with a 14-year-old.

After hearing from both sides with opposing ideas about bond, Judge Carl C. Brown Jr. agreed to set bond for Mr. Davis.

If he posts bond and is released, Mr. Davis must be on electronic monitoring. Judge Brown's order also prohibits Mr. Davis from having contact with any child connected to Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ Apostolic in east Augusta.

Police seek suspects in store burglary

Authorities are searching for suspects in a case in which cell phones, lottery tickets and thousands of dollars were reportedly stolen from an Augusta convenience store Thursday morning.

Police say someone broke into The Corner Store on the 500 block of Eve Street, according to a sheriff's office report. Two cash registers were damaged and $6,000 was stolen from the store, according to the report. The incident was caught on tape.

One person is injured in fiery car crash

One person suffered potentially serious injuries in a North Augusta car wreck Thursday night, an Aiken County dispatcher said.

The wreck occurred on Sudlow Lake Road near Center Street, the dispatcher said, adding that the car was set ablaze in the crash.

South Carolina Patrol Cpl. R.D. Swink said a trooper was heading to the scene to investigate about 11:10 p.m. Thursday, but there was no other information available at the time.

Fort Gordon soldiers gather to pray for nation, comrades

Fort Gordon soldiers gathered in the Gordon Club on Thursday morning to pray for their comrades serving overseas.

Citing Iran, Pakistan and the recent mortgage problems facing America, Chaplain Col. Alvin M. Moore, the guest speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast, assured those gathered that God did not sow a "spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind."

Those attending shared prayers for the nation, armed forces and their community.

No. Dani, what Deborah is

No. Dani, what Deborah is saying is that George Bush is drooling at the prospect of expanding the war to Iran. Just think of all the new No-Bid Contracts that can be awarded to deserving campaign contributors. And McCain has settled on a slogan for his campaign: "Four more years!!"

I know that the Libs don't

I know that the Libs don't give Bush much credit for intelligence but pu-leeze. You have to know he is not stupid enough to start a war with Iran when he is on his way out of office. Use just a bit of logic. He knows that the Dem's will probably take over the White House, so what good would all these contract do him or anyone else when we are left defenseless.

Why are you people worried

Why are you people worried about war? If I Iran drop a nuke on the US or Isreal, then the US will have no choice but to return the favor. I work and live in the middle east and you folks are wishing for peace with these guys and it is not going to happen. We are not muslim and we don't fit in with them. So if and when we fight I say lets do it. So don't be no weakling do the right thing. But I know you are going to think I am crazy for saying this, but do more praying for all of us. GOD BLESS

I'm still seeing a certain

I'm still seeing a certain pattern of last names in crime arrests. Apparently it isn't confined to Augusta.

I have been living on Sudlow

I have been living on Sudlow Lake Road my whole entire life and never before have I seen it this bad with people thinking that they can just go however fast they feel like going, it is just getting too out of control, yes it is patroled by the police, but they really do not enforce the 45 mph speed limit, actually 99% of them are speeding themselves. EVERYONE needs to slow down on this road, now that my daughter is driving it scares me even more, she was only home and in the door 2 minutes when the wreck happened last night. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!!!

i empathize. you'd be amazed

i empathize. you'd be amazed at the speed cars reach on Glenn hills Drive and the force of some of the accidents. i never let my siblings play in the front yard when we lived there back in the 70's, especially after one of the lunchroom ladies, inexplicably jumped the curb hit and killed a little girl that had just moved there. She was in the middle of her front yard when she was hit. my baby brother had just met her. i don't know what was wrong with the driver, but she actually tried to brush it off! i'm not repeating what she said, but it made me sick. it may have been one of those life incidents that made that dear little brother of mine go into law enforcement, seeking to help make this a more just and safer world.

living on Sudlow, While I

living on Sudlow,

While I share your sentiments.....You should be thankful that your daughter was in the house two minutes before. My son witnessed the accident and was almost hit head on. I'm also sure the parents of the young girl who was driving the car last night share your same opinion....However, they might not get the chance to tell her. You ask how I know, I was the one who pulled her out of the burning car...

Years ago, heard some odd

Years ago, heard some odd thumps on Baston Road late pm. i looked out the window saw a car had missed the curve, over-corrected hit some trees and just landed upside down in the ditch in front of my house across from Augusta Christian School on Baston Road. I ran out in my nightgown and pulled several teenagers out, i could smell gas, but thankfully, it didn't ignite. The car's body was straddling the ditch crossways which kept the passenger sections roof from getting smashed when it rolled over to a rest. The teens were all dazed from the accident and hanging at crazy angles because of their seat belts. Thank God they had them on! I never even found out who they were, because after I pulled them out and told them to stay clear of the car, i ran to the house to call dispatch, let the youngsters know they were coming, and as soon as they arrived, I stated what I saw, then got out of the way. It wasn't actually very cold, but the adrenalin had me shivering for a long time after I went back in the house. I'm glad I had a long front yard with trees. Would hate for a car to land up in my front room. I believe a curtain warehouse is where my yard and ranch style house used to be.

I never found out who they were, if they remembered that I helped them out of there, and I obviously never even got a thank you.
