Lady Wolfpack start strong

  • Follow High school

Greenbrier girls basketball coach Garrett Black got the postseason start he wanted after an undesirable finish to the regular season.

The Lady Wolfpack opened a big lead early at home and never looked back in beating Effingham County 54-36 in the first round of the Region 3-AAAA tournament.

After building a 49-game regular-season win streak, Black's team lost two of three to end the regular season. But everything followed the plan Wednesday.

"We set the tone from the first quarter," Black said.

Greenbrier will travel to Brunswick on Friday for a semifinal game against Glynn Academy.

The Wolfpack will continue to try to do what they do best, offset their lack of size with a game-long press and execute an offensive scheme that includes a lot of motion.

It's a formula that worked for the first 20 games this season before faltering against Statesboro and Richmond Academy. The intensity returned during the final five minutes of the season to spark Greenbrier's furious comeback to beat Lakeside.

The Rebels held the size advantage Wed-nesday, but Black said he was pleased with how his team responded.

"We really sustained our possession under the boards tonight and really controlled the boards," he said. "That's new to us. That was one of our concerns. They have a big team."

The Rebels tried to exploit their height advantage early, feeding center Sierra Goldwire, who scored two quick baskets. But that was all the Rebels got in the first quarter, and they were down 17 by its end.

Wolfpack forward Janay Moore scored 19 points and Greenbrier made five 3-pointers during the rout.

Effingham County coach Curtis Stevens knew Greenbrier's reputation going in.

"We knew they were going to play hard and play smart and shoot the ball well, and they always hounded the pass," Stevens said. "We were hoping to try and match their intensity."

The Greenbrier Cupcakes will

The Greenbrier Cupcakes will not make it past the first round of the playoffs if they make it at all. Their pathetic regular season schedule did not prepare them for a viable run in the state playoffs. Stop playing Lincoln, Washington Wilkes, Aquinas, and Harlem. Take a trip to Richmond County and play some REAL competition.

They actually play an ok

They actually play an ok schedule I think they played some Richmond Teams if I'm not mistaken. They wouldnt beat Laney or Hephzibah this year, but for the past three or four years they have made it to the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, and I think they wewnt to the Final four last year with pretty much the same schedule.

The problem this year is that

The problem this year is that the coach has given up on the program. He is now the AD and doesn't have the fire anymore. Don't believe that? No individual scores in the paper? Another appearence in a weak Christmas schedule? 1st year in the last 3 years that no greenbrier Sr. will play in all-star game, even with 2 girls scoring in double figures and 1 scoring over 1200 for her career. This team has had a selfish attitude all very it is very divide and the coach has not corrected that. 1 state playoff game and their done, just the way GB wants it.

as a member of the team... it

as a member of the team... it needs to be said- if you dont know what goes on at practice or in the locker room... if you dont know what goes on with the team... dont make certain comments. coach hasnt given up on anything. he's just a man, he deserves a break just like anyone else does. he has five kids and a wife & he devotes all day everyday to our team. his kids deserve a dad, his wife deserves a husband. he's a great man & he teaches us more than basketball. but you wont understand unless you're on the team. we dont play weak teams. if you wanna try... make the team yourself & see if you can run with us ;) we practice & play our hearts out. we've had some selfish attitudes & coach has addressed it... but if you arent on the team... you wouldnt know... only the team knows what goes on & what it takes to be winners... no one else would understand
