Jaguars undone by breakdowns in loss

In Gaffney, S.C., Tony Baker had a pair of home runs, but Augusta State wasted leads of 8-0 and 13-7 before losing to Limestone 14-13 on Sunday.

Three-run homers from Baker and Alex Sickman helped the Jaguars (3-4) pounce for eight runs in the first inning. Baker added a solo shot in the sixth.

The Saints (4-2) pounded Augusta State pitching for 19 hits, rallying for seven runs and the lead in the seventh inning. Adam McSwain 's three-run homer off Jacob Watson put them up for good.

Kyle Payne (1-1) took the loss for the Jaguars.

- In Aiken, USC Aiken rallied twice from early two-run deficits to take the rubber game of a series against Carson-Newman with a 6-4 victory.

Chad Jacobsen continued his tear to start the year with two hits, a walk and an RBI for the Pacers (4-2). Peden Rucker (1-0) gave up three unearned runs in five innings of work.

USC Aiken's Steven Spire pitched 3w solid innings in relief but loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning. But Carson-Newman (6-3) scored just once.

- Former New York Yankees star Bobby Richardson will be the featured speaker at the annual American Legion-City League reunion on Feb. 21.

The private event will begin at 6 p.m. and be held at Richmond Post 63 on Milledge Road.

Seniors' blasts lift USC Aiken to victory

In Aiken, seniors Leigh Robbins and Amber Hunt smacked solo homers as Augusta State beat Charleston 6-2 in the Aiken Early Bird Tournament

Freshman Jennifer Miller went four innings for the Jaguars (3-0) to earn a win in her first career start. Senior Amy Dumas got the save.

HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

Lakeside standout captures state title

A local swimmer placed first at the Georgia High School Association State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.

Eric Chiu , a junior at Lakeside, won the 100 meter breaststroke at the Westminster School in Atlanta. He added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley.

Greenbrier, Evans and Westside were among the schools also competing at the championships.

TENNIS

Russia advances to Davis Cup quarters

Russia took advantage of an ailing Novak Djokovic to beat Serbia 3-2 and reach the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup. Germany and Sweden also advanced.

The United States, Argentina, the Czech Republic, Spain and France all reached the quarterfinals on Saturday.

- In Pattay, Thailand, Polish teen Agnieszka Radwanska claimed her second career title after saving a match point that led to a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (4) victory over U.S. veteran Jill Craybas in the Pattaya Women's Open final.

- In Paris, Anna Chakvetadze overcame a bothersome shoulder to beat Agnes Szavay 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and win the Open Gaz de France for her seventh title.

- In Aiken, No. 18 USC Aiken bounced back from its season-opening loss and shut out Lees-McRae 9-0 in the Pacers' first home match of the year.

USC Aiken returns to action today at 2 p.m. with a home match against Newberry.

SKIING

Pair share super-G win as Vonn falters

In Sestriere, Italy, Austria's Andrea Fischbacher and Switzerland's Fabienne Suter shared a victory in a super-G that was shaped by varying wind and several crashes.

It was the first World Cup victory for the racers, who both finished in 1 minute, 21.06 seconds on the Kandahar Banchetta course.

American Lindsey Vonn , Saturday's downhill winner, was 16th and dropped into a tie for the overall World Cup lead.
