AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Golphin Hankinson, Sr., born in Aiken County, Beech Island, S.C. to Simon and Lena Hankinson on November 27, 1911, entered into eternal rest at his residence on Thursday, February 7, 2008. Although his formal education was only through the tenth grade at Walker Baptist Institute in Augusta, his wisdom, intellect, and integrity were evident to all who knew him. On April 14, 1940, he married Alice Bradley. They were blessed to have one son, Golphin Hankinson, Jr. Alice preceded Golphin, Sr. in death in 1992. As a young man and entrepreneur, he owned and operated a wood yard and moving business. He also was employed for several years by C&W Railroad. In 1976, he retired from the Savannah River Plant following a 26 year career. He was a devoted member of Hazel Grove Baptist Church for more than fifty years. He joined in 1945. He dutifully served as a deacon and a choir member. Survivors: his son, Golphin (Warrena) Hankinson, Jr., their son, Evan; his sister, Marie Walton; nieces, Janie Bryant and Dorothy Harris; nephews, Rube Hankinson, Jr. and Harold Wimberly; and many friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Hazel Grove Baptist Church, Beech Island, S.C., with Rev. Henry Ingram officiating.
