Feticide charge likely in deaths

  • Follow Metro

An Augusta man who faces murder charges in the deaths of three south Augusta family members Saturday is likely to be charged with feticide as well, District Attorney Danny Craig said Sunday.

The body of Allyson Pederson, 18, who was five months pregnant, was found burned beyond recognition off Lock and Dam Road near Augusta Regional Airport, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said at a news conference Saturday.

Adrian Tywan "Goose" Hargrove, 30, of the 3500 block of Edgeworth Drive, remained in the Richmond County jail Sunday after being charged with three counts of murder in the deaths of Ms. Pederson; Andrew Hartley, 45; and his wife, Sharon Hartley, 46. The Hartleys' bodies were found at their home on Bennock Mill Road at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, police said.

Mr. Hargrove was arrested later Saturday near Richmond Hill and Bungalow roads, authorities said.

Sheriff Strength said it appeared the couple had been stabbed to death.

He said Sunday that police still had not clarified Ms. Pederson's relationship with Mr. Hargrove. He said it's believed the young woman is Mrs. Hartley's daughter and Mr. Hartley's stepdaughter.

Mr. Craig said that in Georgia someone can be charged with feticide if the fetus had reached at least 13 weeks' gestation.

"We're dealing with a separate crime altogether. Georgia law clearly recognizes the unborn child as a life separate from the mother," Mr. Craig said.

Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten said autopsies on the victims were scheduled for today at the Augusta Crime Lab on Phinizy Road.

Police were questioning Mr. Hargrove Sunday in an effort to determine a motive, Sheriff Strength said.

New law should go into effect

New law should go into effect that gives convicted child molesters the death penalty and then this crime would have never happened as well as many others comitted by sick adults preying on younger adults/ children. The limits at what we accept as a society is spiraling out of control and will contine until we get tough on punishment. Simply sickening.

Are we REALLY talking about

Are we REALLY talking about binding and loosing of Demons in 2008? Instead of blaming the problem on "dat der devel", why not look at the social and economic problems that led to this situation? Blaming "demons" for this in 2008, is no different than the Aztecs or Incas believing that a winged dragon was swallowing the sun during a solar eclipse. Faith has a place in the world today, but it is not meant to be trotted out any time there is an unexplainable death. By blaming a demon/devil/spirit/etc. we are effectively throwing our hands in the air and saying "Well, we couldn't have done anything to prevent it because 'SATAN' had taken over." Instead, we need to see this for what it is, a tragedy of the greatest kind, and work together as a people to solve this problem. We are the change we want to see in this world, and all it takes for Evil to prevail in the world is for Good people to do nothing. Kitty Genovise comes to mind...

Howcanweknow...a fetus/embryo

Howcanweknow...a fetus/embryo etc has the "possibility" of becoming a person. Women miscarry "babies" all the time, everyday. Some fertilized embryos don't "stick" to the uterus, therefore no life will result. The mother's intent should be the deciding factor in this issue. I am pro-choice, but my opinion is, if a woman decides she wants to have the baby, to keep or give up for adoption, from that point on, if she is killed it should be feticide. Sorry if this angers other pro-choice people, it's just my opinion.

Dani..people have been

Dani..people have been praying for thousands of years and atrocities have been happening for thousands of years.(Most in the name of religion, by the way) When the 9/11 hijackers flew the planes into the world trade center, they were recorded praying. Praying only consoles the prayer, it does nothing to stop the violence or stem the death toll from catastrophes. I pray every night...it helps me to believe I'm doing something, it eases my mind, but I know whatever is going to happen, will happen. My prayer has nothing to do with it.

jackfruit... you sound

jackfruit... you sound somewhat fruity. I'll tell you what I rebuke... nauseating "bully" Christians like yourself who insist on preaching / forcing your beliefs on anyone and everyone who you think may listen from any pulpit you can possibly find. I also found sonewall's "look at the social and economic problems" comment equally as goofy. This animal committed these vile acts because he chose to and not because society somehow cornered him into it. He butchered this woman and this man and murdered and burned a pregnant teen ager. Some people are just vile and don't deserve to share the same air that we breathe. He (and those like him) needs to be humanely removed from the planet.

gagirl40... maybe you should

gagirl40... maybe you should try a gag next time. This "FETUS" was 6 months old. Do you think it was going to develope into a squash or a potato? I don't think the mother's intent matters one way or another. A life is a life regardless of intent. You baby killers make me sick. How would you like it if your mom decided to abort you? Of course the flip side of that coin would be that if you never existed we wouldn't be subjected to your idiotic and pointless ramblings.

GaGirl: The point is that

GaGirl: The point is that Williston says that a fetus is actually not alive at all. That's the stupid thing she was saying. Had nothing to do with "personhood", but whether a fetus was dead or alive. No one in their right mind could say an unborn child was not alive.

Seven..she was 5 months

Seven..she was 5 months pregnant not 6 which doesn't matter, but the facts are clearly written in the article. Every month if you are a fertile woman you have the possibility of getting pregnant. Some of those embryos, AS I CLEARLY STATED, do not attach therefore a life will not result. My point was, I am pro-choice, and I firmly believe that if a woman decides to abort that fetus and if she is killed on the way to the clinic to do so, that should not be considered feticide. However, if her intention is to carry her pregnancy to full term, then it should be feticide. The mother's intent DOES matter. And by the way, what makes your "idiotic" ramblings more "pointed" than mine? And howcanweknow...I agree, an attached fertilized egg IS "alive" (in the sense that it is growing and dividing)... but so is bacteria and amoeba...the question here IS personhood.

Does anyone on here even

Does anyone on here even gives a s**t that this idiot killed several people without remorse. This isn't about praying or the bible or demons it's about a horrible evil that this man commented. You want to pray for something then pray for the families. I promise you they will need all our prayers. As far as the pregenant victim goes, WHO CARES HOW FAR ALONE SHE WAS IN THE PREGENACY. That idiot just kiiled her and her unborn baby. If it was your unborn son or daughter would you really care how many months it takes before the life counts? No you wouldn't, because all you would know and care about is the fact that someone killed your child.

We've discussed the

We've discussed the PERSONHOOD issue before. Neither you nor I can say when enough cells come together to be "considered" a person. Since no one can say for certain, it would seem that terminating those living cells and/or fetus takes a terrible risk of committing murder. It would only NOT be murder if you KNEW for certain the fetus was not yet a person. Because we CANNOT know this for certain, every abortion runs the terrible risk of in fact being a murder. No physician knows precisely when to "upgrade" a zygote into a person. It's beyond current human knowledge to make that call.

I personally think it is

I personally think it is worthwhile to discuss this issue. Let it be a warning to parents to watch the company their daughters keep and a warning for the young women who fall for these monsters. Each and every tragedy is sad for the people involved, their family, friends and neighbors. (Just recently there was a story in the news concerning a 22 week fetus that was born and is living and doing well). The person who committed this crime is not human, he is the lowest form of life.

However, if her intention is to carry her pregnancy to full term, then it should be feticide." If I understand your words, you're saying that the life of an unborn child is not to be determined by biological gestation at all, but is solely subject to the will of the mother - who declares if the child is either a baby or a bacterium to be cradled or killed? Life, then, is nothing but arbitrary wishful thinking where one person can have absolute say in whether another person lives or dies? Is this the kind of Nazi-like doctrine you really want to propose?
