Trooper dies after car runs off road into pole

ORANGEBURG --- A South Carolina trooper responding to a wreck on Interstate 26 died early Friday when his vehicle skidded off a wet road and slammed into a utility pole, the state Highway Patrol said.

Lance Cpl. James Haynes, 38, was driving on state Highway 33 to a crash involving two tractor-trailers when his car skidded off the road near Orangeburg, patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden said.

Lance Cpl. Haynes' car overturned several times and then hit a utility pole.

Mr. Gaulden did not immediately know how fast the trooper was driving.

It had been raining in the area before the crash, which is still under investigation, Mr. Gaulden said.

Officials suspect gas leak in man's death

COLUMBIA --- Authorities say they think a natural gas leak is to blame for the death of a 20-year-old Columbia man.

Police Capt. Thomas Dodson says a roommate found John Boggs on Thursday night lying on a couch and called authorities.

Capt. Dodson says there was a strong smell of natural gas at the house. He says officials found a small leak in a nearby gas line and shut the line off.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said that autopsy results on Mr. Boggs were inconclusive.

Mr. Watts says he's still waiting on toxicology reports.
