It's a question to which LaRhonda Hall might never get a satisfactory answer.
Why did someone shoot and kill her brother on July 24, 2006, leaving three small children fatherless?
The answer that came out Monday in Richmond County Superior Court: John D. Grimes III was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Mr. Grimes, 27, was walking with a buddy along Martin Luther King Boulevard near 12th Street when shots rang out.
Mr. Grimes was killed and Steve Griffin was wounded but managed to run away.
Sheriff's investigators found no motive or witnesses, and Mr. Griffin couldn't identify the masked shooters. The case remained unsolved for months until a confidential informant came forward, Assistant District Attorney Hank Syms said Monday.
In Superior Court, Alvin L. Scott accepted a plea agreement to testify against Bryant L. Collier, 21 and Terrell A. Green, 20, who were indicted in January on multiple charges, including the murder of Mr. Grimes.
Mr. Scott, 24, told investigators he was the driver that night, and that a man named Andre Jackson, who wanted to take over the drug dealing in a section of east Augusta, had sent them out to shoot up a house.
The plan changed, however, when they saw Mr. Grimes and his friend. Mr. Green and Mr. Collier pulled on ski masks and starting shooting at the two men, Mr. Scott told detectives. He said he didn't know why they were targeted.
Ms. Hall said the family's pain from losing her brother is still with them, and their lives will never be the same.
Defense attorney Martin Puetz said Mr. Scott has been truthful and will testify against the others. Mr. Scott regrets what happened, Mr. Puetz said. He wants to send a message to his younger brother about what can happen when you associate with dangerous people.
Judge Duncan D. Wheale accepted the plea negotiation the attorneys worked out for Mr. Scott, who will serve 10 years in prison followed by 10 years probation for aggravated assault.
Mr. Collier and Mr. Green also face charges. They have pleaded not guilty.

What is the matter with our system!!!Ten years for a person;s life? And we still have to feed them and clothes them!!! We hardly do that for senior citizens. Some seniors can;t even get food stamps, because they get two dollars to much!!!! This creep will get three hots and a cot.!!! Plus dental, medical, glasses, etc.Burn his butt.!!!!!!.
It kills me to see these thugs acting so hard on the outside of a jail cell but once put into detention they scare like little babies. Show's how hard they really are.
I can't wait until you guys go to prison and you find out you are not so hard! There are always someone there even bigger and badder and looking for fresh meat!
