Misogynistic rap plays unchecked

  • Follow Letters

Some unimportant events go unnoticed by the media. Other noteworthy events were undoubtedly noticed, but simply ignored.

The Barack Obama camp playing a grotesquely misogynist and obscene Jay-Z song, 99 Problems, at his victory party in Iowa on Jan. 3 seems to fall in the latter category. The song uses an expletive to describe a problematic woman, whom the reasonably prudent person would conclude to be Hillary Clinton.

Additionally, its lyrics glorify the physical abuse and degradation of women in general. Misogyny on this grand of a scale would normally elicit the outrage of most fair-minded Americans, so why hasn't the Obama camp been held accountable by the mainstream media? More importantly, why hasn't Obama issued a simple apology?

This issue is much too outrageous to ignore. If Obama has so little respect for women that he refuses to even bother addressing what happened, he's clearly neither fit nor mature enough for leadership of this country.

I hope Americans everywhere will join me in electing Clinton, a president who has the decency to offer respect for all groups of people, including women.

Janet, who says this is true? Is there a tape or video? You mean Bill did not turn you off enough already? Good grief...you Hillary supporters are getting rightfully desperate...

Janet, I was "feeling your pain," but then you brought to mind Hillary. Now take Hillary & leave the misogyny to us misogynists. She's a poster child for non-misogynists.

The song isn't about objectifying women, or anything of the sort. All three verses chronicle a black man's experiences with crooked cops, a prejudiced system of law and order, and the difficulties of living up to expectations. The song's conceit--the juxtaposition of relationship problems against REAL social issues--is actually quite a clever one for a pop-oriented rapper. "B***h" is just one of those flag words; it's meant here not as a generic term, but in the context of a problematic relationship. Plus its catchy...give me a break.

Gret point jlruthven. Maybe Ms. Goodman would like to hear some good old Lawrence Welk.

I think Janet is upset that Jay-Z has more cool points than her.

DrGunby68

Can anyone verify that this actually happened?

Coach Lover

I don't know if it happened, but I do know that the Jay-Z song "99 Problems" does not have anything to do with women. The B**ch that Jay-Z is referring to in the song is the drug sniffing dog that the crooked cops are harassing him with.

I'd rather hear "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterions than "99 Problems."

Sounds like the old Ice-T, "I'm Your Pusher", which as any astute listener of rap knows, was not about drugs.

read the lyrics for yourself, then try to tell me why you picked the part of the courus you did to complain about. oh wait jay-z is black and obama is half black so the n word isnt a problem for them. http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/99-Problems-lyrics-Jay-Z/91AC14F0...

Son of God

may all that read this avoid ignorance and be persuaded by your own opinions. a lie does not care who tells it. it is obvious that people don't seek jesus before they speak or write bad comments about someone else. get over it! obama and clinton are children of god but one will be our next president. pray please you obviously do not know jesus or you would speak the word omly and learn to comfort, edify, and exhault.
