Why is it that we Americans continue to repeat the mistakes of the past?
This country was made great by the millions of immigrants that have arrived on these shores, both legally and illegally. Yet throughout history those who came before have tried to exclude those who want to come. Whether it was the Know-Nothings of the 1840s and '50s who rallied against the Irish and Germans, or the proponents of the Chinese exclusion act of 1892, they all have one thing in common: hatred, bigotry and the desire to maintain their own status.
The Augusta Chronicle and the Republican candidates may try to cover-up their bigotry by ranting about "security," but we all know that is not what the current wave of anti-immigration rhetoric is about. If this were the case, why do we not hear anything about building a fence on the Canadian border?
This is a free country. So next time The Chronicle editorializes on keeping illegal immigrants out, just call it what it is: self-serving bigotry!

The real issue is health care for them, they are a burden on our already weak health care system. You also have the problem of stealing identities. It's illegal. Drugs are being brought in mass amounts. Why don't you propose a solution instead of what amounts to name calling and making problems worse? I'd be interested in hearing some solutions that will work.

Our laws provide that all Americans can bring in their family and race, hence each country has about equal quotas.
Any form of amnesty gives a huge preference to Hispanics over Americans of all other races, both in number and timing of those allowed to live here. It is totally racist and violates the Constitution's anti discrimination and equal protection clauses.
But politicians, the media and dishonest business want taxpayer supported cheap labor, and those illegals to keep arriving. They are doing their best to hide the stench of their racist amnesty proposals under fake compassion rhetoric or false allegations of racism..
It is the civil rights battle of the 21st centur.
Will the civil rights of all races in America, will the rule of law, will equality, survive the push for preferential treatment for Hispanics and corporate greed?
Why should Hispanics get preference over everybody else?
Sorry. Type. Ike took four months to deport 1.5 million Mexicans. Check it out. He made sure the experience was not agreeable so they would not return. It worked. Ike had the guts to defend our borders, he did it in Europe and he did it here. The only politician today who is not knotowning to corporate greed and is bucking the bigoted amensty supporters is Mitt. And I am a Democrat.

Why do you think media. business, poltiicans never ask for legal immigrants? They come from all over, They only want Mexicans to further the integration of the two countries.
Check out DAvid Brooks' of the NYT article in Dec saying, his words, "the elite" had made a bipartisan deal for free trade/nafta which was brining in a ton of money. He harranges Lou Dobbs for screwing it up. The profits only go to the "elite" of course.
Really folks, time to wakle up or when you do, you will find we have lost our language, our culture and our county.

Why did Bush let in the Mexican truckers when Congress just passed a bill forbidding it? Why is the fence not being built? Why did Congress just before Christmas do away with double fencintg (the kind that works) and put on conditions so the fence will never be completed?

The pro amnesty, dissolution of American crowd play dirty. Befofre Bush's amnesy bill all the news media was touting a poll saying a majority of 'Americans wanted amnesty. It was not ture. The poll ACUTALLY SAID ONLY 24% SUPPORT IT.
I have been checking the actual polls now. when they are cited as saying a majority of Americans favor amnesty. In one month, in polls cited in the National print media; 1 accuarately refeleced the result of the poll, 1 poll was on a different subject entirely, and three polls did dnot even exist.
Of course the one poll that was accurately represnted was commission by a renowned amnesty supporting paper, and what with push polls, and methodoly, I question whether it is accurate. Non partisan polls (Rasmussen and Zogby) over the last 6 months have been fairly consistent that 68% of Americans want deportation.

We have to fight back. All Neo Con condidates, Rudy, McCain, and Huck are onboard with the "elite". The only one we have left is Mitt. As I said, I am Demcocrat but I am an American first and formost.

They are here because our labor force demands it. You folks don't see the big picture of supply and demand. These hardworking individuals come to this country because of our inability to provide a competent manual labor force. They are not here to steal anything, but like in life, there are good people and bad people. The overwhelming majority of illegal aliens are hardworking family people.
Maybe the solution to deport all undocumented workers is to slap a tax on everyone, especially a corporate tax, to pay for the deportation. It's what a lot of people want (deportation), so they can all help pay for it.
The pity is that Americans are spoiled, they don't have to work, so the owners of poultry packing houses and farms are unable to get workers. We could solve the entire problem by putting the idle to work in these jobs.
Folks This is racial and political, I saw this coming when a Texas population study showed that whites had become the minority in that state. When you add the number of Hispanics, blacks and others in that state it surpassed whites. A few months later the panic and urgency of this issue took off. There are armed civilians on the borders of this country looking for Mexicans, oh so predictable.
Previously we were called racists, now we are called bigots. I prefer the term "patriot". In the beginning, before this land was a country, there were no declared boundaries. The land was occupied by loosely affilliated tribes of people that we today call Indians. There were no declared formal boundaries. Today, many years later, we have formed a country with boundaries and rules that we call laws. We have those laws for a reason, so that many people can live together in peaceful coexistance. True, they are not perfect and we change them periodically to accomodate social changes, but they are still our laws for peaceful coexistance. At this time, we have immigration laws, and we expect those not born in this land to obey those laws when they come to our country. It is a matter of respect. When people disregard those laws, they disrespect our people, too. In previous times, when a large group of people invaded another land, their was warfare until the dominant group prevailed. Up to this time, the United States has never been invaded until now. Over the past ten years or so, we have seen an invasion of people from south of our border. Stop them now, or forfeit the country to them!

Take notice of the caliber of the people supporting ignoring the law. Aren't they the same type that cry "foul" when their bull is gored? It kind of removes the mystery of why 'liberal' and 'two faced' are becoming synonymous.

I liked the Fred Thompson plan regarding the illegal situation, I would like to see one of the other candidates adopt his plan. We have to do something. The ideal situation would be for the Mexican government to create better conditions in their own country so that they woudn't feel the need to invade the US.

What is rather amusing to me is that Mexico has a very, very strict --- harsh, rather --- illegal immigration policy. If an American emigrates to Mexico illegally and doesn't have the payoff money to stay there, the Mexican government will hunt that American illegal down in a heartbeat and will deport him faster than you can say God Bless America. They enforce their laws there but are very critical of the USA when we enforce ours here. One of life's quirky little ironies, isn't it?
It is NOT a matter of how much or how hard people work. It is a matter of lawful and peaceful integration into American society. We have a good life here in the U.S, no doubt about it. However, we cannot adsorb every person who wants to come here. Immigration needs to be controlled for the good of our citizens. If we don't get a grip on the illegal immigration situation, expect overcrowding, crime, and deaths to follow. Do you want our country to end up like Calcutta, India for example? Take a look at this:

Owens and fd are right. Let's just everybody in. Heck, who needs borders anyway. Funny to see owens and fd agreeing with the Prez. And Owens is right. Projections say that by 2050 whites will be the minority. This won't help African-Americans much. Hispanics mostly want to be idientified with whites. But, it will be interesting to see if 30% of the population can feed, cloth, and provide medicine for 70%.
justthefacts, as the incursion continues, that 30/70 ratio will change as will the incentive to use this country to succeed. The money will be forced to migrate to a better climate.

I think that people who exceed the speed limit should be fined. I guess that means that I HATE speeders, since any attempt to enforce the law is indicative of hate. I also must HATE bank robbers, murderers, con men (well, ok, maybe we're getting a little closer, now...). No, loony lefties, come on, you can do better. The "hatred / racism" argument is losing steam due to its evident weaknesses. Real conservatives (by which I mean, people who agree with ME :) ) support greatly increased LEGAL immigration and greatly-simplified guest worker programs that allow for precisely that: guest workers, not people who will come spend five years here and then demand citizenship. We do NOT support amnesty for people who have made it possible for unscrupulous employers to create near-slavery conditions for illegal employees (under threat of denouncing the powerless to ICE), and who have created a subclass of illegal workers who can be used to bludgeon legal residents and citizens into accepting lower pay ("hey, we can always hire an illegal to do your job for $50/day"). Nobody is talking about "rounding people up," so get over it. It's about catching employers who hire them. Make sense?
