AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Sadie "Marie" Bookhamer, 83, beloved wife of the late Col. JA Bookhamer, entered peacefully into rest, comforted by the presence of both her children at her bedside, on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Doctors Hospital. Marie was a devoted wife and mother as well as a beloved sister, aunt and friend. She will be remembered by so many because of her loving and kind nature, as well as, her gift of laughter. She was a curious and independent woman, who enjoyed her children, golf, gardening, volunteer work, and laughing with her friends and family. She dearly loved her "little spot of heaven" on Bailey's Creek and the mountain people of north Georgia. Until the age of 81, she was blessed by God to be able to travel with her beloved Maltese, Tate, from her Augusta home spending her time as she desired. She never knew a stranger; to her a stranger was just a friend she had not met. E.J. Fernadez, M.D., of Ellijay, described Marie as "an adorable lady who I would be proud to call my mother." She will be sorely missed by her children and by all those whose lives she enriched. Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Mary Kathryn Bookhamer Laffoday and one son, Charles Anthony Bookhamer, both of Augusta; a sister, Geneva Tackett of Virgie, Ky. and a brother, Harvey Lee Tackett of East Haven, Conn.; a number of cousins, including Joyce Damron of Columbus, Ohio; dear friend, Mrs. Helen Stanley of Ellijay; 'special' son, Mr. William 'RTS' Manry of Atlanta; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives; and a myriad of special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and four brothers and her son-in-law, Richard Earl Laffoday. Arrangements for memorial services, to bel held at her Blueridge home, will be announced at a later date. Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude PL, Memphis, TN 38105 or call 1-800-822-6344. The family would like to thank all the medical and support staff, including those at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, for the loving care they gave our mother.
