Donations set new record for area families in need

In what has become a holiday tradition, donations to The Augusta Chronicle's Empty Stocking Fund set another record for annual giving in 2007.

Area families, businesses and organizations contributed $123,457.63, which helped 1,776 families or 6,645 individuals during the 2007 holiday.

"For almost 80 years, the people of this region and the readers of The Chronicle have shown that the true spirit of Christmas is generous giving," said Chronicle President Don Bailey.

"Again this year, we thank those who helped make this special time of year even more special for those less fortunate."

Many of the recipients were caregivers, parents or others suffering through a family tragedy, illness or job loss who asked only for some help in making Christmas brighter for their children.

The Chronicle began the Empty Stocking Fund in 1930.

In 2006, $121,827.35 went to help 1,738 families. In 2005, $120,159.56 helped 1,233 families.
