Pastel on Richland closed its doors to customers Jan. 19 because the strain of running art businesses in two cities proved overwhelming to the owner.
"We love Aiken. Aiken has been receptive to Pastel. The shop has done well, but I have not," said Cheryl Grace, who, along with Philippe Chin, opened the art cafe in November 2006.
The couple moved to expand the art cafe concept they started at Pastel on Central in Augusta in October 2004.
Both stores featured local artists' works, such as painting, gardening items, jewelry and home decor. The Aiken store featured some clothing and was the site of a monthly wine tasting and open house.
Ms. Grace said the decision to close the Aiken store was not easy, but it was hard for her to manage both stores.
"The Augusta Pastel is only two blocks from my house," she said. "I think I can do better in one place."
Ms. Grace said she is consolidating the inventory of both stores at the Central location.
"I think it's going to be fabulous," she said.
She said she will continue to represent the same area artists, just from the Georgia side of the Savannah River.
Ms. Grace and Mr. Chin own the building at 312 W. Richland Ave., and she said she's sure another business will soon move into the space.
