Danny Craig will complete Judge Neal W. Dickert's term, which runs through the end of the year.

Gov. Sonny Perdue selected Mr. Craig on Friday.

"I was so excited myself I forgot to ask," Mr. Craig said Friday about when he starts his new job.

Mr. Craig, 52, was selected from a short list compiled by the state's judicial nominating commission. The other nominees were Columbia County Magistrate Judge Wade Padgett, 42; and Augusta attorney E. Freddie Sanders, 58, of the Capers, Dunbar, Sanders & Bruckner law firm.

The seat has been open since Nov. 1, when Neal W. Dickert resigned.

Mr. Craig will complete Judge Dickert's term, which runs through the end of the year. The office will be on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election.

He joins seven sitting Superior Court judges who preside over domestic, civil and criminal cases in Richmond, Columbia and Burke counties.

Because the district attorney is a state officeholder, the governor will need to appoint someone to Mr. Craig's former job.

Mr. Craig, who earned his undergraduate degree at Augusta College and his law degree from Mercer University School of Law, has practiced law since 1979. He was elected district attorney in 1993.

He is a former president of the Prosecuting Attorneys Counsel of Georgia, and he has taught classes at the national center for prosecutors. In 2000, he was named District Attorney of the Year, and in 2004, was awarded the National Trial Advocacy Award.

Mr. Craig and his wife, Crystal, have three daughters and two grandsons.

This is one of the few times that each of the three candidates demonstrates good moral character, ethics and integrity. Congratulations to Craig -- the appointment is well deserved. Now, get back to work...

He was not a competent

He was not a competent district attorney in my opinion, and the judge will have a lot of appeals due to his decisions.

Too bad Perdue doesn't listen

Too bad Perdue doesn't listen to a few honest citizens. Danny Craig has knowingly prosecuted innocent people and knows that his ADAs have too.

Right after he became DA,

Right after he became DA, there was a case the sheriff's department goofed up on. Instead of charging a man with molestaion on a 13 yr old, the weekend investigator charged him with just sexual battery. The child was held against her will, and she thought she was going to die.The investigator handling the case tried her best to get Danny Craig to add more charges, but he refused. The man got only 30 days in jail, got out and did it again.the girl got a life sentence of emotional problems.Because of that case, I don't care for Danny Craig.

dizi, what he did not do in

dizi, what he did not do in that case was not from a highly principled person. Maybe Danny Craig has changed or grown up since then. I just know he was negligent in that case. The defendant had money and also had a criminal record(sex offense) from another state and had served time, but RC said he had no record. I saw the prosecuter a few yrs later, and she told me about the past record.

I am estatic with this

I am estatic with this choice! Danny has proven himself over and over again. I think he is an honest man and God knows, Augusta needs this. Danny will do a super job. Danny visited our home when he was running for the DA position. I remember this well. He took the time to answer questions we had- he will always have our votes. The sad part is that the other two candidates could not win also- a great slate! Glad the Govonor can see we have great potential for the future. I am curious if these two men will be on the slate to fill Duncan Wheale's position???? Good luck Danny!!!!

Sometimes, as a prosecutor,

Sometimes, as a prosecutor, you gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, or know when to run. A prosecutor can only do so much. If the evidence is weak, or a mistake is made in the investigation, the error benefits the defendant. A prosecutor cannot take a flawed case to trial and gain a conviction. Rose, maybe you didn't like the way he handled the case, but maybe the evidence was weak and he did all he could to gain some kind of conviction. Depending on how you look at it, this is the unfortunate/fortunate price we pay for our judicial system. Bottom line is, Danny is a man of moral convictions who has common sense and doesn't think he's "holier than thou", as some judges around here think they are. Hopefully, he will follow the path of Judge Watkins and be as effective as him.

BR549, the man pled guilty.

BR549, the man pled guilty. when he did it to another girl, he pled guilty again. Danny Craig should have added the felony charges. You don't know the details of that case. I do. Don't assume that Danny Craig can do no wrong. He did in that case.

OH BOY! Look out Geri Sams,

OH BOY! Look out Geri Sams, Ronnie Few and other well known blacks in Augusta area. Danny couldn't indict you while DA...He will surely try his damn'est to get you in court should you ever have to go before him. Danny has been known to do the judicial lynching work of the GOP in Augusta.

Danny Craig, Oh boy. I am so

Danny Craig, Oh boy. I am so sick of hypocrite conservatives in this country. If you look at the well known ones, they always scream of family values and education. They are the ones with multiple marriages and divorces, and they are the ones on the down low. They hate gay people and yet they are gay. They hate cheaters and yet they are the ones who cheat. They hate drugs and yet they are the ones on drugs. Please use your vote on real people who practice what they preach. They claim Reagan , oh he was married twice. What fakes. How may times has Austin been married, So he's no day at the beach.

On reviewing the comments I count 20 ataboys and 6 oh s---s, with several of the latter coming from the same poster. Adding my ataboy makes it 21 to 6 in favor of Danny Craig's appointment to the judgeship, a very good endorsement for a public official

Thank goodness this guy is no longer the DA. Hopefully voters will speak and keep this hypocrite off of the bench. Danny Craig has and always will do what is in his best interest. If you pat his back he will pat yours. A lifelong member of the Good Ol' Boy society.
As for how Sarah, his daughter I do not know. But perhaps the focus should be on how Lydia's family is doing?

Mr Duvall: Apparently you

Mr Duvall: Apparently you don't know what a yellow-bellied liar Craig is; the naysayers do. We may not have anything to do with the current status he finds himself in, but when this term is up, the voters will speak. Craig knows NOTHING about law; he knows a great deal about feathering his own nest.
