On Saturday, 340 Girl Scouts will begin selling cookies door to door. From Feb. 29 until March 25, they will also set up booths at businesses.
The traditional cookies -- Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Thin Mints and Do-si-dos -- will be sold this year along with three new additions: Lemon Chalet Cremes, Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip and All Abouts.
"We have five (varieties of) cookies we keep all the time. We change out cookies to offer people something new to choose from," said Lindsey Rivers, the communications specialist for the Girl Scouts.
Participating in cookie sales is a way to teach Scouts different values, she said.
"The girls will learn ... responsibility, teamwork and how to handle money. While they are learning, they are also having lots of fun," Ms. Rivers said.
The profits from cookie sales are divided among six areas: programs for girls, 48 percent; cost of cookies, 28 percent; troop proceeds, 15 percent; cost of cookie-sale support, 4 percent; recognition awards for girls, 3 percent; and troop bonuses (where applicable), 2 percent.
Cookies cost $3.50 per box.
