AUGUSTA, Ga. - Reverend Benjamin J. Smith, age 64, beloved brother of Nancy J. Smith of Stevens Crossing, went home to his Lord on January 14, 2008 at his residence in Augusta, Ga. He was the son of the late Smitty and Madelle Smith and the grandson of the late Ben B. and Emma Stevens. Reverend Smith, born in Savannah, Ga., graduated from Swainsboro High School, attended the University of Tennessee with a football scholarship. He was a retired Ordained Minister, founder and director of Greater Augusta Recovery Residences, and founder of In His Image Ministries. In the late 1990's, he organized various evangelist crusades in various countries to build an orphanage. His sister said he had a kind and loving heart and loved animals very much. He was one of the most gentle people she has ever known. Funeral services will be Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with Reverend Jake Malone officiating. Interment will follow in the family cemetery at Stevens Crossing. He is survived by a sister, Nancy J. Smith of Stevens Crossing; Sonny and Jeanne Coleman of Stevens Crossing and several other cousins; special caring friends, Mrs. Nell McCrary and husband Larry, Reverend Jake Malone, Gail and Tony Hammett of Augusta; and his beloved pets, Ruthie and Mollie. The family will receive friends Friday morning 1 hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. service. Tomlinson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
