Less than three weeks after the Augusta Colts signed their first three players to contracts, the city's newest indoor football team has increased its roster fivefold.
Former North Augusta High School quarterback Brandon Satcher topped the list of local players signed by the Augusta Colts over the past two weeks.
"He's coming back with a more positive attitude, and we're really looking forward to having him here," Colts director of football operations and head coach Bubba Diggs said. "I have a lot of confidence in him."
Satcher saw limited action with the Augusta Spartans last year but never played in a home game. He'll make his Colts debut at James Brown Arena on March 13. "I'm really excited about this year," Satcher said. "Look at the guys who have signed. We're loaded at wide receiver, and that's something as a quarterback I couldn't ask for more."
All 15 players who have signed with the Colts are former Spartans.
Last year's World Indoor Football League MVP and former Josey standout Marvin Stone will lead a unit of wide receivers that includes Rod Price and Anthony Young.
Young, along with defensive lineman John Cratic and cornerback Chip Dykes, were the first three to sign with the Colts on Dec. 28.
Since then, the first-year franchise has unveiled its new logo and introduced Stone as its franchise player.
Colts general manager John Sisson said that by the time the season opens there will be some new faces on the team.
"Right now it looks like we're just putting Colts jerseys on Spartans players, but we'd be foolish not to go out and sign the ones who made the Spartans champions," Sisson said. "But there will be guys Augusta hasn't seen yet. They won't all be former Spartans."
Diggs said he's looking to start training camp on Feb. 21 with at least 35 players vying for a spot on the 20-man roster.
"We just had a tryout this past weekend, and I had about 40 guys out there," he said. "It's been good to have all the business taken care of and now we're back out on the field."
