First lady recognizes library for its service

WASHINGTON --- South Carolina's Georgetown County Library was among 10 cultural institutions honored Monday by first lady Laura Bush for their creativity and public service.

Mrs. Bush and Anne-Imelda Radice, the director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, recognized five libraries and five museums in a White House ceremony.

"As a former librarian and someone who lives in a museum, this is one of my favorite events," Mrs. Bush said.

Supreme Court backs conviction of official

COLUMBIA --- The South Carolina Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a former lieutenant governor.

The justices unanimously said a lower court did not err in convicting former Carolina Investors Chairman Earle Morris Jr.

Mr. Morris was convicted on 22 counts of securities fraud and one count of engaging in a scheme to commit securities fraud. He was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison but remained free while he appealed.

A message left with his attorney Monday was not immediately returned.

Ex-university leader is critiqued in report

COLUMBIA --- Former South Carolina State University President Andrew Hugine failed to meet the expectations of his board of trustees in two areas, according to his performance review.

The board said that Dr. Hugine, who was fired last month, failed to improve the university's infrastructure and that several academic programs were in danger of being eliminated.

Dr. Hugine did not comment, but he released his official response, saying several criticisms were wrong.

Man enters not guilty plea to counterfeiting

TERRE HAUTE, IND. --- A judge entered a not guilty plea for Julius "Butch" Nesbitt at a hearing on two felony counts of counterfeiting stemming from nearly $60,000 in fake money found when he was arrested last week in Terre Haute.

Mr. Nesbitt, 58, has been held under a $50,000 bond on the counterfeiting charges while also being held under a South Carolina warrant for drug charges filed Nov. 24. He admitted he orchestrated his "death" to flee criminal charges in South Carolina.
