Smith's free throw lifts Jaguars in OT

SAVANNAH, Ga. --- Steve Smith's free throw with 37 seconds left in overtime broke a tie and lifted Augusta State to an 83-82 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State in a Peach Belt Conference game on Saturday.

On the ensuing possession, Smith knocked away Corey Johnson's shot underneath the basket with three seconds left. Armstrong Atlantic State retained possession, but Jamal Galloway shot an air ball on a 3-point attempt as the shot clock expired. After the turnover, Augusta State inbounded the ball and the game clock expired.

Ben Madgen hit 17-of-18 free throws and scored 28 points to lead the Jaguars (9-3, 4-1 PBC). Garret Siler added 21 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Dixon scored 15 points and Tyrekus Bowman recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Johnson led Armstrong Atlan-tic State (9-3, 3-2) with 27 points.

AUGUSTA STATE WOMEN 79, ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC STATE 67

In Savannah, Ga., Nicole Mealing came off the bench to score a career-high 25 points and lead Augusta State in a Peach Belt Conference game.

Mealing, who tied a school record by hitting seven 3-pointers, also grabbed 10 rebounds to post the first double-double of her college career.

Deo Ngulela added 13 points and eight assists for Augusta State (9-3, 3-2).

The Lady Jags matched a season high with 10 3-pointers, going 10-for-20 from beyond the arc.

Augusta State also committed a season-low 11 turnovers.

Kaneetha Gordon led Armstrong with 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Augusta native Dartayvia Thomas added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

KENTUCKY STATE 81, PAINE 72

In Frankfort, Ky., Kenny Jones scored a game-high 26 points to lead Kentucky State (7-4, 5-2 SIAC).

Julian English scored 22 points and Donald Harris added 10 for Paine (3-8, 2-5).

KENTUCKY STATE WOMEN 70, PAINE 68

In Frankfort, Ky., Mattie Jones scored 18 points to lead Kentucky State (6-6, 5-2 SIAC) .

Paine's Savoyia Barrett led all scorers with 29 points. LaKeisha Bell added 13 and Latoya Ashely had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Lions (3-6, 2-4).
