The Coliseum Authority's personnel committee wants the full board to hire an interim attorney and certified public accountant to replace the ones the board fired this week and advertise to fill the jobs permanently.
The committee voted Friday to fill the posts of attorney Ed Enoch and CPA Harry Dolynuik, who were abruptly fired Tuesday by four board members, and to seek permanent replacements. Voting for the measure were Keith Brown and Willie Law. Committee Chairwoman Janice Jenkins did not vote based on authority rules. Committee member Freddie Sanders did not attend the meeting.
The vote followed a two-hour closed-door meeting in which authority Chairman Harry Moore tried unsuccessfully to persuade the committee to recommend rescinding the firings.
"I tried, but they wouldn't do it," Mr. Moore said. "But a motion will be made at the next board meeting to reinstate them."
The full 12-member board is scheduled to meet Jan. 22.
The firings came after state lawmakers Sen. Ed Tarver and Rep. Hardie Davis had met with authority members to get their input on whether the law that created the authority should be changed to modify or abolish the body.
After Mr. Tarver and Mr. Davis left that meeting, members of the board took Mr. Moore to task for holding a Christmas party at James Brown Arena for employees, lawmakers and commissioners that they said they did not sanction. Then they went into a closed-door meeting to discuss personnel issues, including manager Robert "Flash" Gordon's performance evaluation.
But before any discussion of Mr. Gordon's performance began, member Willie Law made a motion to fire Mr. Enoch and Mr. Dolynuik. Mr. Law, Ms. Jenkins, Mr. Brown and Mildred McDaniel voted for the motion, and Richard Isdell, Jack Usry and Freddie Sanders voted against it. Mr. Moore votes only in case of a tie.
The move prompted Mr. Moore to call for the board to be abolished.
