Next president faces many issues

  • Follow Letters

The November presidential election is crucial because the future of our country is at stake. Like great countries of the past that failed, we must avoid reaching a zenith. We are at a point where we must take inventory and solve some of our problems if we expect to continue to be a great nation.

The next president, with Congress, will have to address a large number of issues that are not being discussed or debated during the primaries, and not expected during the campaign unless we become more concerned.

From my perspective, the issues are the national debt; Social Security solvency; inflation; Supreme Court appointees; an Iraq exit plan; trade and budget deficits; income tax reform; effective accountability of federal contracts; and stiffer penalties for businesses that employ noncitizens.

The next president and Congress also will have to work together on energy alternatives; curtailing escalating health care costs; implementing strong foreign policies; decreasing or eliminating terrorism; rebuilding international coalitions; and much more.

We have a great country, and we are a strong and caring people. We must realize we must compete in a global culture. We must be able to communicate and respect people of all races. Bullying people makes enemies, not friends.

We must have a strong, compassionate and effective leader who can build coalitions among the nations of the world and people at home; advocate a strong defense; and be a supporter of civil liberties, human rights and a beneficial domestic agenda for all people.

We must not let the candidates get us involved in emotional, family values or religious issues. These are issues we must deal with privately or with a loved one, minister or professional counselor. We want the government to stay out of our personal lives.

We must know where the candidates stand on these issues I have mentioned and others, before we render our votes for them.

Sorry Tracy...here comes the right...they know that they have no chance this fall against whoever we put up. The feeble excuses are coming, no doubt starting with PT.

I just don't see whoever the GOP candidate is having any type of real success in any place besides the notoriously red states (GA, SC, etc). Huckabee's evangelical background is going to make independents extremely wary, and Romney, even if he snags the nomination, is just not going to gather enough steam.

patriciathomas

I think you often misread me DrGunby. What needs to be done is pretty well spelled out by Tracy. How we handle this agenda is always the most difficult part. The congress is responsible for most of the goals listed here, with the leadership of the president, of course. Returning the hard core power brokers on both sides of the isle will prevent anything but business as usual. A socialist leader won't improve the situation any more then another Bilderberger. The endless anti-American political assault by the Democratic party for the past six years makes no more sense then Bush's policy to ignore the energy dependency problem, the border problem or the confiscatory tax problem. I certainly don't see any chance of improvement with Hillary, Obama, or Edwards leading the country. And to be honest, as usual, I don't see a good conservative at this point either. The easily recognized concern is the supreme court appointments. We're still reeling from years of uber liberal appointments and a return to the status quo will go a long way toward destroying this county.

shivas

You are right Tracy! However, as the democrats continue to present solutions to the problems faced by this country, we have the right-wing, as evidenced by patriciathomas, name-calling and labeling those they disagree with as Socialist. The liberal buzz word has lost it's credibility since conservatives in power have proved to be failures. Therefore, they have searched for a new buzz word and have come-up with the term "socialist.' Again, not one solution in their debates except to ssay what they will not do, and then argue who is the real conservative, and defend statements regarding a wife submitting herself to the husband. This si how out of touch the far-right and patriciathomas are with the rest of the country. I shall quote The Who all day as my motto, "we won't get fooled again."

patriciathomas

Shivas, you didn't watch the debate did you? The primary theme was cutting taxes and "paying for it" (liberal phrase) by cutting spending. Cutting spending! Have you ever heard any politician say that? I know you've never heard a liberal say that, except in relation to national defense.

dani

It was a great Republican debate at Myrtle Beach last night. The best yet. Fred Thompson, a true conservative, convinced me that he has the ability to lead the country and in the right direction. Now, that would be a change.

shivas

That's all the republicans ever say, "Cut Taxes." Then when they get in office they pass the biggest tax increases ever seen. Bill Clinton was toe only person who kept his promises and restored the economy for W. to butcher once again. Bush Sr and Bush Jr. Republicans have no credibility. Fred Thompson, now there's a good one Dani. He certainly looks presidential on Law and Order, but seems zombie-like in real life. Can you imagine him facing a real life giant personality such as Hillary and Obama? Yes, he sounds like a good republican: all show.

willistontownsc

And now, the Republicans (at least Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee) are now talking about raising our taxes by more than 30% with the so-called Fair Tax.

AGR354

the fair is a tax cut. it willnot start until the IRS is dissolved. Please study the fair tax before you judge it

patriciathomas

The Fair Tax is not a cut. It's tax neutral. The tax will disappear from the hidden taxes and from your income and be transfered to your consumption. EVERYONE that makes a purchase will pay their taxes. Only those CITIZENS that file each year will be eligible for social services and prebates. Read the book. FairTax.org doesn't tell all of the details, but does give a good synopsis.

patriciathomas

Shivas, CUT SPENDING is the phrase your eyes scanned over. Tax cuts and spending cuts. Now that's what I call love.

justthefacts

Anyone find it interesting that John Kerry has turned his back on Eswards. 4 years ago he thought Edwards was Presidential material. Kerry, still flip flopping.
Shivas, please let me know where I can find the information that Bush passed the biggest tax increase ever. I am very misinformed on that. Thanks.

AGR354

Who Cares about John Kerry?

convertedsoutherner

kerry still has his eye on the presidency and probably thinks obama has the best chance for him to be the vice-president. think about that. he will suck up to anyone that he thinks might give him that chance. kerry knows edwards wouldn't choose him.

neversurprised

Just don't let Billery become President!!

charlesmanson

so what tracy is basically saying is the next prez has one hell of a mess to clean up. that means that this bum who thankfully will be leaving in a year has been a total failure.some competent person has got to go behind this buffoon and try to salvage what they can, that he and darth vader couln't destroy.i voted for kerry in 04 mainly because edwards was on the ticket. i regret that vote since we see kerry's true colors.endorse who you want to kerry. i hope edwards wins and makes you feel like a damn fool.edwards will atleast get my vote, for sure.

justthefacts

Charlie, you will discover the "shift" key before Edwards get elected to anything other than dog catcher. Your vote will be worthless.

bigalsc

So last night Thompson showed that he's at least not brain dead, and that makes hime a conservative Republican champion, dani? Give me a break while you grasp at straws. You must be employing the same skill set used to choose GWB for his strong leadership skills.

PLAYLIKETHUNDER4

patricia, trying to explain actual concepts and the workings of laws, etc. to shivas, gumby and the rest is a waste of time....in my absence i thought these people had thankfully gone away, but i see it isn't so.one can only hope.

dani

The Fair Tax is not fair for those who don't earn a salary. They don't care if you abolish payroll deductions, it doesn't affect them. They are scared to death they might have to, for the first time in their life, have to pay taxes. The debate is between the employed and the unemployed.

jack

Shivas, the "solutions" called for by Hitlery are as socialistic as any european socialist country. Socialized medicine, $5000 bonds for every baby, government IRAs, you name it. The democrats have always been the party of the nanny state. Obama has yet to specifically state what "changes" he intends to make.

jack

Shivas, Fred Thompson wont cry when the going gets tough.

charlesmanson

you got that right justhefacts, apparently my vote was worthless in 00 and 04 also.the unsupreme court, along with james baker, jeb, and kathleen harris made sure in 00. ken blackwell, and diebold took care of 04.this election is far from over.i will vote for edwards. i like obama, but he needs a lot of explaining about his religion, and why does he seem so unamerican? what changes will he make? elaborate please.hillary and edwards would be a good team. many prez and vp's barely tolerated each other.dani, you love bush's leadership? he's a punk darling. would you feel safe with a a draft dodger who went in and hid in the tang? he hasn't backed down from anyone? he's not fighting!, the soldiers are! jack, fred looks like warmed over death.he's about as exciting as a paper bag.he's lazy, boring, and uninspiring. you vote for him if he lasts that long!

convertedsoutherner

edwards lives in a mansion and pays over 400.00 for a haircut. hillary and bill are another story. they both will draw pensions as senators, bill draws ex-prez pay, possible hillary rodham (hope not) draw ex-prez pay. they have security around the clock, they had to build a residence for them to stay on their property. for this residence they charge the govt somewhere around $10,000 a mo. and who do you think pays them for that residence - the taxpayers. not a bad deal. these really sound like your regular citizens, don't they. no wonder they want to keep taking our money.

oh man

DrGunby68

Sorry Thunder, we have not gone away and you had better get accustomed to us. We'll have both houses, the Prez and we'll swing the court over the next 16 years of Dem dominance. Bush has made it all possible by DESTROYING your party, its once, in my opinion, "decent", reputation and our stature around the world. His fellow closeted Repubs with all their scandals and hidden gay lifestyles have made you'll look like a joke. I did not say you were a joke, but even Repubs have to admit that your party is in disarray thanks to Gduhhhhh!!

dani

Charlie Once If the republicans were smart enough in oo to rig the voting in all 50 states so that Florida would get to decide the winner, they deserve to come out on top. I just wish I knew how they did it. They even fixed it so the Gore couldn't even carry his own home state. I geuss the Dem's have some catching up to do when it comes to smarts.

DrGunby68

Dani, will you acknowledge that Gduhhh has really screwed your party?

convertedsoutherner

will you acknowledge that carter was and is a complete embarrasment to the dem party. b clinton did so many things, while in office, but people kept covering up his mistakes. hitlary has no respect for women or herself by the way she has covered for bill and allowed him to continue his abuse of women. why do we continue to enable these people to continue their behavior and keep them in office.

dani

Dr..I will admit without hesitation that I didn't approve of the timing of the Iraq invasion. I don't approve of the way money has been spent. I also know that no two people are alike and I sincerely believe that electing a Republican to replace Pres Bush is the best thing for the country.
I heard two very distinguished black gentlemen today stating that Ron Paul's idea for a strict Constitution is a good thing. ron Paul doesn't believe in entitlements or social programs. I don't like to see programs for the needy taken advantage of, but I do know that some programs are needed but on a more limited basis. I an a news junkie and I don't miss many articles or broadcasts. I believe that a true conservative is what we have to have.
